Pros: Very nice taste, milder and smoother than typical gin products.
Cons: None, unless you absolutely have to have that typical mouthwash burst of London drys.
The Bottom Line: An Excellent Gin! I like it better than London drys because of its smoother, more mellow taste. May be hard to find, but I encourage you to search it out!
(A REVIEW for those over 21 years old and who are responsible enough to not over-indulge in alcohol. Also, responsible enough to not drink and drive.)
I have always loved Tanqueray and cranberry, mostly because it has always been kind to me on the morning after. But, I always had to be "in the mood" for that gin taste, or else I'd be searching the liquer wall for something else.
I decided to try a mini bottle of Citadelle, not really expecting it to be any different than Tanqueray or Bombay Sapphire, but it is different. It is a more mellow gin taste that doesn't overpower your senses like London dry gin.
The only drawback I see at this point is that some liquer stores do not stock Citadelle, probably for the same reason they don't all stock the "new-age" vodkas - it is too new. Lots of bars and restaurants currently don't stock Citadelle either. Maybe as time goes by and the news catches on that this is really good stuff, this problem will disappear. (Until then, I would suggest you order it at your local ABC store.) I could likely enjoy the old London drys in mixed drinks if need be, but I personally won't be ordering any more martinis unless they can be made with Citadelle.
Anyone loving gin should like Citadelle, because you still have a distinct gin taste. It just doesn't taste quite as astringent as gins you've probably had. It will likely change what you've always considered gin to be! The French folks proved a good thing could be made better when they released Citadelle!
I already have 2 small bottles of London dry in my cabinet. However, I will have to go out and buy a bottle of Citadelle gin as well, just because I like it that much better! They're not all the same to me anymore!
More often than not (and DEFINITELY for martinis) I will be grabbing for my bottle of Citadelle!
