| scapp70's Full Review: Classic Disney Vol. 1: 60 Years of Musical Magic |
One of the most well-known love songs from Disney's animated movie soundtracks begins this CD. A Whole New World is one of the many musical highlights from the 1992 animated film, Aladdin. It is a musical duet between the two main characters, Aladdin and Jasmine. The song is easy to sing-along to and filled with an emotive lyric as Aladdin vows to show Jasmine the wonders that the world, that were previously closed off to her.
The Lion King is not one of my favorite Disney movies, but it did produce some good music. Circle Of Life written by Elton John and Tim Rice has almost an African bombast, if there is such a thing.
Now, Beauty and the Beast is, in my opinion, a very good Disney movie, but not one of my favorite Disney soundtracks. For example, this song Beauty and the Beast to me is boring. Angela Lansbury sings it, and although I like her, her voice turns me off here.
The Little Mermaid, like Aladdin has a perfect soundtrack. Under the Sea has a Caribbean calypso groove, and actor Samuel E. Wright brings the authenticity that the song needs. This song is one of the highlights in the film and its soundtrack. The same goes for the lesser known track, Kiss the Girl, as it is just as entertaining, despite the difference in recognition. Kiss the Girl is again sung by Samuel E. Wright (Sebastian, the Caribbean crab).
Some of the others included on this disc is from the film The Lion King. Probably the most well-known is Hakuna Matata. The phrase has become a part of American pop culture, and is mostly invoked these days in a comedic situation outside of the film. The song is sung by Timon and Pumba (Nathan Lane and Ernie Sabella), two beloved characters from the movie, and the upbeat song is beloved by child and adult alike. Probably, my personal favorite from this movie is the song I Just Cant Wait to Be King. Jason Weaver provides the singing voice for young Simba, he adds a Michael Jackson from the Jackson 5 type of vibe to the vocal. It makes me wish Jason Weaver was singing on more of the songs, but this is his one solo lead performance in the song.
Like I said before, The Little Mermaid has an outstanding soundtrack. In my opinion, the songs that are created for the villains to sing are not as good usually. Here, within the Mermaid song list, Poor Unfortunate Souls is just another precious stone in the crown of achievement the music is. The song is sung by evil villainess Ursula the Sea Witch, and the lyrics are as amazing as the loveable tune.
Would you believe that I have never seen the Mary Poppins movie until recently. Well, I never really appreciated the songs included here from the Mary Poppins soundtrack, but now I love them. Julie Andrews has is my favorite female singer ever. This CD contains three songs. Chim Chim Cher-ee is my absolute favorite from the movie. The music has such a haunting melody, yet the lyrics are upbeat and light about how much fun you can have when with a chimney sweep. A Spoon Full Of Sugar really showcases Julie Andrew's amazing talent as she convinces these children to take their dose of medicine. The song seems simple and fun, but Julie's voice commands you sit up and listen. Dick Van Dyke sings the song Jolly Holiday with Julie Andrews. It's a very British-style song, without all of that old Brit lingo, but Dick Van Dyke really lays that accent on thick;
♫ Oh 'appiness is bloomin'
All around 'er
The daffoldils are smilin'
At the dove
When Mary 'olds your 'and
You feel so grand
Your 'eart starts beatin'
Like a big brass band
Oh, it's a jolly holiday with Mary♫
Some of these songs are from movies or television like the title theme song from The Monkey's Uncle. Annette Funicello is singing this song along with The Beach Boys, and it seems to work. It flows within this song list despite its 60s rock and roll sound.
Another song with a nod to the music culture of the 60s is Let's Get Together from another movie I haven't seen, The Parent Trap.
The movie Summer Magic is also remembered here with a Burl Ives number The Ugly Bug Ball. The song is what you'd expect from something sung from Burl Ives yet with a Disney bounce that makes it a bit more accessible.
Of course, some classic songs from the classic animated films from the 40s and 50s are included. The Work Song and A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes from Cinderella. The Work Song is fun, a very upbeat number that tells the story about how the mice that live in the house of Cinderella wanted to surprise her with a new dress. Dream is a Wish is a bit boring for me, but I can see why Cinderella fans love it as well. In my opinion, this ballad sung by the main character brings the movie to a lull, as well as this CD.
Good thing Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah brings the whole mood back up again. Uncle Remus sings this song from the very rare Disney film Song Of The South. If the listener frequents Walt Disney World, this song would be a happy reminder of a favorite attraction, Splash Mountain.
No Disney anthology is complete without a nod to both Peter Pan and of course Mickey Mouse. You Can Fly, You Can Fly, You Can Fly! is from the 1950s film Peter Pan. It has the sound of the huge Disney choir that brings back great childhood memories of a lot of us Disney fans. Mickey Mouse is brought to mind when you listen to Minnie's Yoo-Hoo. Taken from a very early Disney cartoon short from 1930. It has that silent era type of sound to it and it includes the silly cartoon camouflaged voices where they sing through loose fists.
These CDs were originally released every couple of months, but finally ceased at the fifth volume. They are also sold as a boxed set, but they have sort of become rare as far as your local retail store, but online you shouldn't have too much trouble locating the single CDs or the boxed set.
