jester943's Full Review: Cobra Electronics 148 GTL 120-Channels Base CB Rad...
The Cobra 148GTL has been around quite some time now, and is probably the finest choice on the mainstream market for a 40 channel, SSB-capable mobile CB Radio. The 148GTL is a well-crafted, improved version of both the earlier 140 and 146GTL models, which debuted around 1978, 1 year after the FCC expanded the CB band from 23 to 40 channels. Overall, Cobra has done a very good job with the 148GTL, so well in fact that it remains its SSB flagship radio and is almost as popular as it's best seller, the Cobra 29. While SSB is not as popular as AM, those who are SSB enthusiasts know that the Cobra 148GTL is an excellent radio for the money, and can be found at many electronics outlets and truck stops. The radio still maintains its population and reputation for quality in the age of export radios flooding the market. Many drivers think that spending 300$ plus for a "big radio" will solve their communication problems, but in actuality, they can nip the issue in the bud for around 150$. Unless you are a competition station, there is really no reason to drop big money on a Galaxy, Connex, RCI or Magnum radio. With a good antenna and a powerful microphone, you can rival the big boys for a fraction of the cost, and the Cobra 148GTL is the perfect radio for the job.
