Pros: Lightweight and sleek design, nice display screen, great sound
Cons: Gets VERY hot on the bottom, crashes a LOT! multiple driver problems
The Bottom Line: I recommend that if somebody gives you one of these you should sell it before it dies. Don't buy one unless you like to repair computers.

| klmoate's Full Review: Compaq Presario 1720US PC Notebook |
I purchased this laptop in December of 2001 a week later it locked up on me and I had to return it for repairs. I got it back from Compaq stating that all was well. So my wife used it for a while and it kept crashing at the most inopportune times. We ended up sending it back to Compaq(now HP) and they replaced the motherboard. Ok we should be fine now right? Wrong the video drivers weren't working properly and a good one didn't come out until Feb 2003. the problem was that windows XP had just come out and manufacturers were having driver conflicts. So we used it for a while longer and lo and behold the thing crashes with the blue screen of death appearing at powerup. HP had returned the laptop to us with the top cover incorrectly installed so we had to send it back in for that and another motherboard was installed. The thing finally died again after several months use and multiple shut downs during use. When I returned it to the dealer for the final time I noticed that the cover where the memory chips goes was warped from the heat that this system puts off. You couldn't keep it in your lap with thin pants or shorts on it would burn you. I believe that this model has issues with its cooling system design that caused most of the problems we experienced. I stated this each time it was sent for repair but nobody seemed to think my opinion mattered. I was definitely glad that we had purchased the extended warranty that the dealer offered or we would have been stuck with a 1400 dollar frisbee. I would not recommend for anyone to purchase this laptop unless you live where it is very cold so you can use it as a room heater. Unless HP has solved Compaq's cooling problems with this model don't get it.
