Pros: Good starter Laptop. Max memory of 1gig is good. Light.
Cons: Only 8mb video card, 20gig HDD, low cd-rw speeds.
The Bottom Line: Good for internet and e-mail. Not for anything else.

This computer looked great at the store. But it stopped there. Once I ordered It, I went online to get a memory upgrade of a 512 mb stick. They both came at the same time. I did notice the extreme heat coming from the memory compartment, so I made a custom cap that includes a fan and a vent (30 hours of work, its not easy). So now I have to spread my legs when it’s on my lap so I don’t block the vent. But it has made a difference. Two weeks later, it crashes. But this was due to Roxio Go-back not being compatible with XP. So I reloaded. A month later the mouse doesn't respond and the keyboard stops working when it wants to. 7 days later I got it back with a new keyboard and mouse. I start to travel to work with it and not but a week later the "tough exterior" seems to wear. The bottom left side breaks and the DVD/CDRW outside case comes off. It looked like it had been through skydiving or rock climbing. 3 weeks later, a replacement (with no explanation why). It did great for the rest of the year. BUT!!!!!, three weeks after the warranty expired, the screen cracked. I wrote to a few owners I found on the net, it happened to three of them as well after the warranty expired. And Compaq would not do anything about it. The good news is since HP took over, they felt bad and are fixing it 3 years later. So a fun time with this laptop. I will be getting my fixed laptop in a week. Take my advice, look around before you buy. We have always bought Compaq and will still buy from them. But when it comes to $1400 laptops, we may have to go with the alternative.
