Pros: FM tuner. Remote control. Line out feature. Ripping/burning software.
Cons: Doesn't work as advertised. Very poor skip protection. Virtually non-existent support from Compaq.
The Bottom Line: I would look elsewhere. The concept is great but performance is very poor.

| mozzeppi's Full Review: Compaq iPAQ PCD-1 Personal CD Player |
I bought the Compaq PCD-1 thinking "This is just what I've been looking for!" I wanted a player to use at home, in the car and at the gym. I've been burning CD's for some time and was very pleased that Compaq had come out with a player that would play mp3's from CDR and CDRW media. The FM tuner was also a big plus for me.
The problem is, it doesn't work very well. After trial and error over many days I concluded that the only way to get the device to play an entire disc of mp3's was to make sure that the bitrate of each file was the same. Impractical to say the least. Also if the CD was left open for subsequent recording, it wouldn't play. The software provided with the device often crashed in the middle of a recording session, essentially ruining the CDR.
They should call their version of skip protection "Skip Delay" as even a slight movement of the device would result in skips 40 seconds later. The manual that came with the PCD-1 was very poor, in my opinion, and the serial number was "hidden" on the under side of the battery compartment lid, making it practically invisible. If you want to contact Compaq about the device, you need this number to access their online service techs. In my experience it's a waste of time anyway. I was told to ship my BRAND NEW player to the service center for repair AT MY COST. Customer Communities at Compaq's website was full of people having the same problems as I was and didn't seem to be getting any help.
At this point I took the PCD-1 back to the place of purchase (Radio Shack) and was cheerfully given a refund.
Go here http://communities.compaq.com/servlet/ProcessRequest?RHIVEID=121&RPAGEID=0
enter PCD-1 and take a look at what other owners have to say before you buy. I've yet to find anyone who got the PCD-1 to perform as advertised.
