Intro
Wow, it's sure been a while. Sorry everyone, I was away trying to get accustomed to my new job, which unfortunately I had to quit! Asthma problems and the like, so I'm again low on money. Ahh, but what's this? They finally added Crown Royal to the database, whooo looks like I don't have to spend money on buying other stuff, to review. For now, I'll open up my 750 ml's of Crown Royal, and begin the consumption of this fine bottle on a reviewers note.
Now, if I could only convince them to add Hpnotiq and Red Passion Alize to the database, epinions would be a lot better place. ... now.. where was I? Oh yes, onto the review.
My Introduction to Crown
Wow, I don't even remember my introduction to crown. I believe I was around 10-12 years old, brimming with curiousity. Someway or the other, I got a hold of crown royal and tried it.. Yeuck I thought! Who would drink this stuff? At the time, I thought it was poison... ahhh the naivety of a young child with poor taste.
Now a days, I've been into consuming Crown Royal, though a lot of times with coke. Though I don't drink often, specially hard liquors, I've just finished consuming the remnants of a 375 ml bottle a few months ago... and am now on my 750... which was starting to call out to me.
Smell
A sweetish type of smell, which lingers in the nose after-wards. There's also a hint of the oak barrels which are used to age the whisky, that briefly harasses the sense of smell. Warning, this smell can become a bit sickly to a person with an empty stomach, or for someone to smell too long.
Pour-Color-Cling...Etc..Etc...
Pour is a nice flow like water. It comes out of the bottle easily, and there's nothing sticking to the sides, like say Cinnamon schnapps, or some other sugary and syrupy type of drink. Suffice to say, you know you are going to be getting your money's worth with Crown Royal, because it's more then possible to collect every single drop of this precious liquid!
As for color, in the bottle, Crown Royal appears a dark amber. It's semi-clear and filters light wonderfully(light coming through the bottle appears a nice gold-like color). Out of the bottle, crown is a little softer in color, still a warm inviting yellowish-orange.
Cling, as I said before, this stuff doesn't cling! When I swirl the crown around in my glass, there's not much of anything left on the side of the glass. Maybe a light film, but nothing compared to a thicker drink. That, in my opinion, makes this more appealing to try.
Flavor
First sip, the alcohol burns my tastebuds up front. I'm also assaulted by a strongly sweet flavor and a warming sensation that's not a burn. Possibly from the slight oak-flavor left over from the aging process? Perhaps, then again perhaps not, I can't really place the taste.
Second sip, more of the same results. The flavor is decent by itself. Though I wouldn't sip this usually. Crown royal, if you're going to drink it straight, then it's a shooting drink. I wouldn't recommend drinking this regularly by itself, as it could kill your taste-buds in a hurry.
However, I do find Dr. Pepper a fine drink to mix with Crown. As I now sip on a crown royal and dr. pepper mix, I do find that the crown royal flavor compliments that of the dr. pepper almost flawlessly. Other-wise, you can enjoy Crown Royal mixed with coca cola classic. I'd advise against pepsi, seeing as how the combined sweetness of the two drinks can be too hard on your stomach.
Crown's Strength
Ok, it's no where near an Everclear or a 151 rum. However, it can be considered a heavy-weight in its own right. Crown Royal is 80 proof, or 40% alcohol by volume. This pretty much seems to be the standard for whisky's and rums, by non-drinkers knowledge. However, since indulging myself in the world of alcohol a little deeper, I can comment that this is about middle ground.
Other Rums, Whisky's and Vodka's.. etc.. can range between 20% abv and 95.5 abv's. So if you're looking for something relatively week, then crown isn't for you, but if you're looking for something moderately strong, then I'd suggest you give crown a try!
Over-All
Crown Royal is a nice drink, well respected by myself and the rest of the people I know that are drinkers. Notice, that as of now, Crown Royal is the whisky I'd actually drink with-out heavy mixing. Others I've had, I've seriously had to mix down till the flavor was faded into oblivion.
Crown also has a very neat looking bottle. Regal in its appearance, the crown royal bottle would make an almost majestic center piece, if converted to a oil candle.
If You Like Crown Royal
I'd recommend trying Crown Royal-Special Reserve. I'd also go out and try Grand Marnier, Triple Orange, which though different in respect to Crown Royal, is comparable because of it's remarkable sweetness, despite the 40 percent alcohol by volume.
Finale
I'd recommend giving this a try, definitely. If you do like it, make sure to support Crown Royal Fully, by purchasing a Crown Royal 750 ML's, in a box that comes with either 2 glasses or 4 glasses, with the official Crown Royal Crown!
