When we moved into our current home three years ago, one of the things that didn't make the move was our toaster. To put it nicely, it was junk. So, my mother-in-law was kind enough to buy me a new toaster as a gift. At the time my son liked to have peanut butter on toast for breakfast, and so did I. Ok, I liked to have peanut butter on toast for more than lunch - but I was pregnant at the time, and hungry. The model that she got for us is this Cuisinart Cool Touch 4 slice toaster in black. She purchased it at Costco and I don't know what she paid but I was surprised when I saw this same model (from years ago) still being sold recently for under $30. The MSRP is $49.95 and it comes in Red, White, or Black. You used to only be able to get the black one at Costco.

About the Cuisinart Cool Touch 4 Slice Toaster
Well, it has four slices which means you can toast up to 4 pieces of bread at once. I rarely use all 4 slots at once, but when I do have the need for it this is a convenient that I appreciate. The features of this model include:
-4 slices, dual control panels, two toasters in one
-Custom control: LED 9-Setting browning dials; LED bagel, defrost, reheat, and cancel touchpad controls
-1 1/2" -wide toasting slots
-Extra-lift carriage levers
-Slide-out crumb tray
-Convenient cord wrap
-Limited 3 year warranty
I like the styling of this toaster, though I do find that it is fairly bulky at W 11" X D 10" X H 7". They call that compact? This toaster takes up quite a bit of counter space and I've been known to put it away for months at a time to get back precious counter space. Part of why this toaster is as large as it is has to do with the fact that it has wide slots so you can toast bagels, waffles, and anything other than traditional sandwhich bread with ease. I appreciate this because it means I don't have to risk my life and stick a fork in to retrieve a broken bagel piece. At one point I had a set of bamboo toaster tongs, but my son saw fit to break them trying to use them like chopsticks.
Though there are 4 slices, this toaster is really like having 2 toasters that each accomodate 2 slices. There are 2 dials on the front that control how light or dark you desire your toast on a scale of 1-9. As you turn the dial the number setting you have selected peeks through a small window above the dial if you crouch down on eye-level to see it. One dial controls the 2 slots on the right, and the other the left. So, you can have 2 barely toasted and 2 dark pieces if people in your household have different preferences. I find that most of the time both my dials are set to the same setting and that I really don't need 9 toast levels - 3 or 4 probably would have been sufficient for me.
What I really love about this toaster is that it has a defrost setting on it - great for frozen waffles, bagels or toast. This has come in quite handy recently since my son is now on a gluten free diet meaning that he has special bread that not only doesn't contain wheat it has no preservatives in it. This means his bread has to be kept in the freezer in order for it to remain edible. I've even found that I can select a higher toasting level and skip defrosting it if I'm in a rush and just toast the heck out of the frozen slice. For this reason and this alone I've pulled the toaster out of cabinet mode and it is earned its spot back on my counter top.
Cleaning this Cuisinart toaster is very easy since there is a pull out (drawer style) crumb catcher tray that rather infrequently needs to be emptied (depending on how often you toast). The exterior of the toaster I can simply wipe clean with a moist towel and its good as new.
Overall, I've been pretty pleased with our Cuisinart toaster. I do feel that perhaps it is "too much toaster" for our needs with all the extra settings and for the fact that I probably could have made do with a 2-slicer. Still, I feel that if I scaled down now I would miss what I have with the Cuisinart Cool Touch 4-slice.
