Pros:sleek retro design, defrosts, extra heat for bagels, wide openings, reheat feature

Cons:none really other than not for larger items or hot dog buns

The Bottom Line: Great style and price for Cuisinart quality.

Since 1971, Cuisinart has been making quality small appliances and cookware and in that time they've gotten the reputation for making high-end culinary machinery. After all, their name melds the words "cuisine" and "art."

Recently, my wife has been complaining about how long our Oster Toaster Oven takes to simply toast two slices of bread.  During her busy morning routine, the toaster seems to slow her down all too often.  Truth be told, I think it's the time she spends spoiling our three dogs.

Be that as it may, I was at our local Costco and spied this Cuisinart beauty. The first thing that captured my attention was its retro styling. Its classic lines are reminiscent of an appliance era when things had style and simplicity.  But this toaster unit is far from the basic toaster of yesteryear.  Not only does it have four slots, but the slots are wide enough to accept thick bread slices and bagels.  Add to that some features not found on most of today's toasters...  On the face of the toaster, there are four buttons and a dial.  The 1-6 dial is for the level of "brown" you wish your toast to be.  I like mine set at "2" while my wife likes it closer to "3." The top buttons are for thick bread and bagels, the second buttons actually defrost the bread and then toast it. The third buttons actually reheat the toasted bread WITHOUT browning or re-toasting it.  It actually reheats the toast without making it more charred.  The fourth buttons are simply to cancel a toast cycle. Each button (except for "cancel") has a corresponding red LED light that illuminates when in use.

Costco's display toaster was in a beautiful red color but after searching for the red version, I quickly learned that the only two colors Costco is selling are black or white.  I chose the black finish because I felt it would show dirt a lot less and it just looks more sleek. I have (since) noticed that Cuisinart offers the same toaster in stainless steel for a lot more money. The only difference I can see is the stainless steel finish and if the difference in price is worth it to you just for the finish - go for it.

Another nice feature is that you can toast from one to four slices of bread and in pairs.  Couples can now toast their two slices differently - meaning that both people can toast their slices just the way they like it and that's a real marriage-saving feature.  If toasting one slice, the slot all the way to the right is labeled "1". When using this slot by itself, the toaster will not over-toast the one slice thinking there are two slices to cook.

After I planted this toaster on our counter, I actually had to decide whether (or not) I'd keep the large toaster oven as well.  While this vertical toaster does get the job done efficiently and expediently, toasting hot dog buns, reheating pizza slices or cooking meals with convection heat forced us into being a two-toaster family.

Each slot pairing has a feature called "extra-lift carriages" which means that smaller pieces can be lifted a bit higher up and lessening the chances of burning fingers or the need to stick a metal utensil in the slot thereby saving the risk of electrical shock.

CLEANING: Is fairly simple with its smooth surfaces and located in the lower back are two pull-out crumb trays that simplify the ugly task of crumb eradication.  A damp cloth should be used on its outer shell, but I'd recommend unplugging the toaster before any moisture is introduced to electricity. They don't get along very well.  Yes, even after all these years, they haven't seemed to work out their differences.

TOASTING TIPS: The six-page manual offers up some useful tips on toasting.  Since the act of toasting is actually a combination of cooking and drying of the bread, different moisture levels in the air and of the bread itself will require different levels of toasting.  In other words, dryer bread requires less time toasted while wheat bread, English muffins, bagels and fresh breads may require a bit more time due to moisture content.  When preparing items like toaster pastries, they should NOT be toasted but opt for the warming of the reheat cycle instead.

SAFETY:  ANY appliance that's located near a water source should be plugged into an outlet (or circuit) with a GFCI included (the one with the "test" and "reset" buttons) so that any contact with moisture will save someone from electrical injury.  Another nice feature is that the outer shell of this product stays cool to the touch, but caution should be used when putting fingers near the metal slot openings.

WARRANTY: It comes with a limited three-year warranty BUT California residents have a slightly different set of warranty parameters.

FINAL WORDS: The fact that it's a Cuisinart brand toaster coupled with the low price tag and stylish design should result in this toaster being a no-brainer for most any kitchen.  Cuisinart's website lists this toaster for $49.99 so don't be fooled by the low price at Costco - they're probably going to replace this particualr model. Smaller kitchens lacking ample counter space will benefit from its small 11" x 9" footprint.  For these aforementioned reasons, I can whole-heartily recommend this toaster to most anyone. Chances are most kitchens and restaurants in the world have something made by Cuisinart in them. Whether it's a coffeemaker, food processor, toaster, food griller, blender, rice cooker or even cookware.

Cuisinart... Savor the Good Life.

Happy Toasting.
