Decent entry-level sandwich grill, but not without its drawbacks

Pros:Cheap, makes great grilled cheese sandwiches, somewhat easy to clean

Cons:Cleaning can waste paper towels, non-removable plates, 1 temperature setting

The Bottom Line: Recommended if entry-level sandwich grill/maker is what you want to experiment with. However, if you've used one before, buy one without the same drawbacks.

One of my housemates recently purchased one of these on sale. I've never used a sandwich grill before, but since its purchase I've been using it every other day. Even an entry-level sandwich maker like this can elevate ho-hum ingredients to a high level. I especially like using sourdough, extra sharp cheddar cheese, tomatoes, and mushrooms to make a yummy grilled cheese sandwich. Note that the plates generally work with square, standard slices you get from normal mass-produced supermarket loaves, but irregularly-sliced bread (such as most sourdoughs) will work if you do one sandwich at a time, grilling in the middle of the plates.

However, cleaning isn't so easy since the plates are non-removable. I waste 3-4 strong paper towels to clean the WM-SW2 after each use, this despite using butter or oil each use, so probably using cloth towels would be less hard on the environment. Also, charred bits of food may fall down into hard-to-clean cracks.

The single temperature setting doesn't bother me much since I only put cheese, fresh produce, or pre-cooked meats in my sandwiches, but it may be an inconvenience for other people. Also, the plates aren't very deep, so sandwiches either get squashed down too much or ingredients can't be piled on very thickly. Having the ingredients getting smashed down is okay with me -- my sandwiches still turn out tasty, but again, it may not be to everyone's taste.

If you've never used a sandwich maker before and want one to experiment with, then the WM-SW2 by Cuisinart might be the right choice for you, but if you've already been hooked onto having hot sandwiches made right at home, then another model without the same drawbacks as the WM-SW2 would be a better choice.
