Pros:Makes sandwiches fun!

Cons:Could be easier to clean

The Bottom Line: Quit eating boring sandwiches and try one of these now.

I got married almost a year ago (October 22nd) and this Cuisinart Sandwich Maker is one of the many appliances we received as a wedding gift. Out of all the many kitchen appliances we were given, this little sandwich press has been used the most. It’s so easy to turn a regular cold and dry sandwich into something special.

When I was little, my mom used one of these to make us pizza sandwiches. Although the technology for these sandwich makers is nothing new, the design is simple and efficient. This thing is basically just a waffle maker with different plates inside. It’s pretty easy to clean, though it can still get messy, but otherwise it works great.

First, you start with some bread. Make sure it’s the basic square kind and not the extra wide kind, otherwise it might not fit. You need to have some squish room around the bread for when you press it down. You can fix up your sandwich any way you like. Just make a regular ham sandwich or use egg and bacon. Tomatoes are really good when heated up in here, and it always melts cheese evenly. You can even do peanut butter and jelly. What you put on your sandwich is up to you, but I encourage you to play around with the ingredients. My mom’s pizza sandwiches just had three ingredients: spaghetti sauce, mozzarella cheese, and pepperonis.

To use this grill, you simply plug it in and wait for it to heat up, then put in your sandwich and close the lid. There is no on or off button, but a red and green light on top will let you know when it’s heated. Don’t rely too much on the lights, though. After a minute or two, your sandwich will come out with lightly toasted bread and the insides will be very hot. You should let the sandwich cool down a minute before trying to eat it, otherwise you might burn your tongue with scalding hot melted cheese or juices.

If you look at the photo above, it shows how the sandwiches look when finished. A divider presses it into two triangular pieces, but you’ll still need a knife to cut the sandwich in half if you use any lunch meat. Soft stuff like grilled cheese will pull apart easily, though. This grill doesn’t completely flatten the bread, but it does a pretty good job of pressing it down, depending on how much stuff you put between the bread.

When you close the lid, a little plastic latch will hold the two halves together. The latch seems rather flimsy and I worry about it eventually breaking. If you put a lot of stuff on your sandwiches, sometimes you have to squeeze the press down pretty good to get a good close on it, and that just stresses the latch more. The latch on my mom’s old one was also broken, so she just held it closed when in use.

Cleaning on this unit is pretty easy, though it would have been a lot easier if the plates were removable. It is recommended that you spray a little non-stick oil inside before placing your sandwiches, otherwise you might be scraping melted cheese out of the inside. The black metal plates inside seem to be coated with something because they clean well without the oil. The easiest way I’ve found to clean it is to get a dampened sponge and wipe out the inside real well, then dry with a paper towel. Since you don’t actually cook raw foods with this device, you don’t have to worry so much about disinfecting it like you would a George Forman grill. I would not recommend trying to cook raw meat in this grill.

When you’re finished using this grill, you can close it with the latch and then it’ll stand up on its back end for easy storage. I keep it on a shelf under the countertop and it takes up very little space. When closed, this press has a handle to make it very portable. I do wish the power chord on it were longer, as it’s only about three feet.

I enjoy my Cuisinart Sandwich Maker and use it at least once a month. It’s easy to use and fun to experiment with, plus very affordable. It retails for about twenty bucks, and I think it’s worth every penny.
