This is the 4th sandwich maker we have had in 20 years.

This one was rugged enough that we did not break the hinges, which is the failure of the earlier machines. In their defense, they did last approx 5 years each, and they were used by families with five children (ages 4 - 18).
This one ceased to heat within 3 months of purchase, and there was only one college student at home.
Before buying this sandwich maker, you need to check the warranty conditions. With our unit, the manufacturer was happy to fix the unit, provided I shipped it to their site, PLUS I was supposed to pay $10 for them to return it. All told I would be out an extra $20 in order to fix my $20 unit.
I buy very few few new appliances, but sandwich makers are an established part of the kitchen. I especially do not like the idea of throwing nearly-new things to landfill, but in this case, it is going to happen... and I will find another brand.
It seems to me you are risking $20 whenever you buy a Cuisinart product, which is enough to put me off all Cuisinart products.
