DenimDude's Full Review: D-link DCM-202 Cable Modem
We became familiar with the D-Link, DCM-202, Broadband Cable Modem when lightning struck our Comcast line and thereby destroyed our Cable modem, router, and computer. Our new experience with the D-Link, DCM-202 coaxial cable broadband modem is described below.
Since we have a wired, "multimedia home network" that uses a "D-Link GamerLounge Router 4100", (a router allows you to share your internet connection between two devices, such as your computer and a "Media Center Extender" device located in your living room.) and this has performed flawlessly while viewing movies in our living room, I have really learned to trust the D-Link brand. With a home network, you can view movies in your living room with movies that are pre-downloaded from the internet that reside on your computer in the office, or from movies that are streamed into your living room directly from the DCM-202 broadband cable modem.
After perusing over the other models available, the new CompUSA sales tech said that our Comcast Internet Service Provider, (ISP), works best with the "Motorola Brand" Cable Modems. Since my previous cable modem I had purchased was an "RCA Brand" model, I knew that this was not the case. One only needs to check to see if their new broadband cable modem is "DOCSIS 2.0 certified by Cable Labs". And the D-Link DCM-202 model is.
Out of the Box, once I registered the D-Link DCM-202's MAC address with Comcast, our ISP, the modem connected effortlessly, and the Comcast tech at the other end said that they could "see" our modem, and that is was working.
As I then pondered about what my connection speed would be with this new DCM-202 modem, I went to an A Beltronica speed testing site, http://www.abeltronica.com/velocimetro/pt/?idioma=uk&newlang=uk. As usual, my surfing speed is fantastic. I then went to another site, http://www.speedtest.net/ , and again, the D-Link DCM-202 modem's speed was terrific. Next I think I will "surf the Net" and see how responsive it is.
But...before I report on my surfing experience, I would like to describe what the D-Link, DCM-202 broadband cable modem looks like, the indicator lights it has, and the connections available.
The unit is small and has random-sized ventilation openings like that you would find on a piece of swiss cheese, or different sizes of dark stars like when you look up at the sky at night. It has has 5 indicator lights and is powered by a transformer-type, little-black-box type plug. The DCM-202 broadband cable modem can be connected to your computer's ethernet port, (4-foot ethernet cable included) or if you don't have an ethernet card or ethernet port built-in, you can use the DCM-202 broadband modem with one of your available USB ports. (4-foot USB cable included.) The latter connection requires drivers that are available on the included CD-ROM. Since our "D-Link, model DCM-202, Broadband Cable Modem" is connected directly to the ethernet port, I cannot comment on how this unit funtions with USB connectivity. The "TurboDox speed enhancing software" available on the included CD-Rom, is also only for the USB connections, and I cannot comment on how this included software works either, sorry to say.
With the ethernet connection, you need no drivers or software from the included CD whatsoever, and the unit functions, out of the box, and as soon as your ISP provider has provisioned your new modem's MAC address onto their system. From my experience, ethernet connections are plain and simple. Period.
The five lights indicate: 1. Power 2. Cable Connectivity 3. Status - Connection status with your ISP 4. Ethernet Port 5. USB Port
When properly connected, the first three lights glow steadily with a greenish yellow color. Depending on what connection you have made with this modem and to your computer, the Ethernet or USB port lights will flash intermittently when data is being transmitted and/or when idle. The unit can sit on 4 small rubber feet, or can be set up on its end, with its length towering up, and included in the box is an adapter that allows you to set it up on its end...and it looks just as cool this way. I have mine on its end as when it sits atop another power consuming device such as the router, it can get rather hot. On its end, it saves desk space, and is then only taking up a width of about 1.5 inches of desk space.
Finally, does it work? Is it SNAPPY. Is it FAST? Yes, Yes, and YES!! Via an ethernet connection, this modem ROARS, right out of the box, with an Ethernet Connection, and with Comcast.
The surfing speed is fast, crisp, and responsive. Upon clicking a webpage link, one is directed swiftly to the page with very little or no hesitation, whatsoever. Graphics on the page load quickly....so quickly...that often you don't realize that the page had changed at all, but it has!!! When this rapid change occurs I often feel dunfounded, and I wonder why I didn't see the change happen. I mean, I am staring at the monitor, just inches away from me, how can a whole webpage load right before my eyes and I not realize it? Have I temporarily blacked out? Don't get me wrong. Speed is good. I like speed...I just like to see things happen is all.
Yes. If you have an ethernet port buy the DCM-202 cable modem from D-Link. You'll never know what hit you.
