| curtisonline's Full Review: D-link DI-514 Wireless Router |
I purchased this wireless access point, firewall, router and four port switch from BestBuy after they had a $50 dollar rebate. I also was looking for a small footprint firewall to replace a Linux IPTables system I was using. I must say I am very impressed by the functionality and ease of setup of the DL-514. You can configure the product in a very simple manor or you can take advantage of its advanced capabilities. The ability to port forward services from the public network to a internal computer and also apply a ACL (access control list) to restrict who is actually allowed to access that service from the public internet is wonderful. You can also do things like configure the D-Link 514 to update one of multiple dynamic DNS services with your new IP address. This allows you to easily find your home network from your work or a friends house. This product also included an 802.11b access point that supports 128bit encryption. You can also configure the wireless not to broadcast your SSID (this is handy to keep casual war drivers from logging your SSID and location). One other feature that is helpful with wireless is the ability to select your signal strength. This allows you to reduce the coverage of you wireless so your wireless will not travel beyond your home.
The only drawbacks I have found is that it treats your wired and wireless network as one network. This means that if you want to restrict your wireless clients to only a few MAC addresses you have to actually put in MAC addresses for machines on your wired network also. I also had a problem getting my Linux laptop connected the wireless network. I had to set the "Preamble Type" to "Long Preamble" for it to work correctly.
I am currently using the D-Link 514 with Comcast with a DHCP IP address. I have not tested the products other types of connections (PPOE, PPTP).
