Pros: Inexpensive, mac address filtering, high speed ethernet, fairly strong signal strength.
Cons: Annoying disconnection issue about every hour, wireless connections are dropped. Sometimes a bit cranky.
The Bottom Line: An inexpensive wireless and ethernet router, but firmware "B1 "(at least) will drop wireless connections occasionally. Certain features require additional advanced configuration.
xanman25's Full Review: D-link DI-514 Wireless Router
Well, it's a bargain wireless and 10/100 ethernet (4 port) router. MAC address filtering and a powerful firewall (but the firewall requires some experience.) BUT, one significant issue: the wireless part seems to drop wifi connections every hour or so. Can't seem to fix the problem, and from other reviews, it appears pretty common in this model. Particularly in Hardware Revision B... you can tell which revision on the outside of the box, by the D-Link barcode/UPC. (Revision version A1, B1, or C1)
If you find a hardware revision other than B, or if you can do larger, important transmissions with the Ethernet connection, and just use the wireless connection for non-essential work (like email, synchronization, web browsing, etc.) it shouldn't be a problem. However, if you edit documents through a direct connection to a server, don't use the wireless connection on this device. Your connection can drop, and you could lose your changes since last save.
Also, if you have wireless connection problems, be careful about the "Transmit Preamble." Some older devices, specifically the Dell Truemobile 1150 require a "Long Preamble", and the default setting on the DL-514 is "short preamble." This is under the advanced wireless settings.
One more thing, per some other posts I've seen; the MAC address filtering is for ALL devices, ethernet and wireless. So make sure the first "permitted" MAC address you enter is correct, and for the machine you are using for configuration. Otherwise you'll just have to reset and start over.
