tsienville's Full Review: D-link DI-514 Wireless Router
I purchased the Dlink DI-514 as an extra router for a second DSL account at home and I am very impressed. I have been a customer of D-Link for some time and also own their DI-624, and three wireless cards. The DI-514 confirms that I continue to like D-Link. I had the router set up and running in around 5 minutes. Someone that is not network-proficient would also find the wizard very simple to use. I have also used D-Link technical support (but not for this router) and have found them to be helpful and experienced reasonable hold times. About the router itself, the DI-514 is an 802.11b 2.4 ghz 11 mbps router. It is in fact very basic - these specifications are fairly low to average in today's world. However, that was all I needed and it does the job perfectly. It has 4 wired LAN ports and 1 wireless antenna. It supports 64 or 128 bit encryption, and also has MAC and IP filters if needed. I don't use its firewall feature - but I know it has one. Wireless range is great - I have a 2 story 2500 sq ft. home and have had no signal problems anywhere in the house. The router is also very stable if configured properly - no drops or lost connections. I've read other reviews to the contrary and drops are most likely caused by configuration (The router timeout should be set to zero and auto-reconnect to on. Also, any DSL modem with built in router functionality should have the router function turned off - or else the two may conflict). The bottom line - this wireless router is nothing fancy, but unless you are running a fractional DS3 into your home or office, its speed and performance will be all you need for home / small office use. After all, it only costs about $29 after rebates!
