benicia's Full Review: DCS BGB30-BQR Propane Grill
I always thrill to writing a positive review and have written so many here on EPINIONS. This isn't a site to complain but a site to 'share' and it is with regret that I find myself submitting a negative review.
I purchased my DCS (30 inch) grill from EXPO (a Home Depot upscale division). DCS (Dynamic Cooking Systems) was recently aquired by a foreign firm called FISHER & PAYKEL. In fact I chose DCS because I had owned a previous DCS grill and still own two DCS outdoor heat lamps. The DCS outdoor heat lamps have been superior products to date with near 6 seasons of use without incident.
You'll pay near $2,000 for this grill with a cover and some basics. It is a stunning grill to look at and the feel of the weight and construction are reason enough to consider a DCS product.
Upon getting my DCS grill home and starting the construction/assembly process, I was surprised to find screws and knobs that were not stainless steel. If you live near the coast, stainless steel screws are essential and this near-all stainless steel grill compromised itself by using cheap parts from China including the screws.
I loved (past tense) the way the DCS BGB30-BQR Grill cooked... Heating in minutes and exceptional heat/BTU output. Once at maximum heat, steaks took some 3-5 minutes and came out with perfection.
The DCS grills use a CERAMIC ROD SYSTEM to dispense heat evenly. However, their shelf life is less than a year and each rod costs $7.00 each. At 36 rods X 7; you'll spend near $260 a year with shipping in replacement cost. These rods 'powder out' into nothing and you must have them for both heat and distribution. Also, you can only get these ceramic rods from DCS in Southern California. They are sold only by DCS.
The grill comes with a 1 year warranty. Multiple parts on my DCS grill failed within 8 months use. Upon contacting DCS, a delay of 60-90 days took place in parts replacement. I even offered to pay expedited shipping but the required parts needed were out-of-stock and those parts had been outsourced to other vendors so extensive delays in replacement times were required.
My DCS unit had a failed igniter, one of the two top grills split, a burner cracked (there are two in this grill) and all my grills screws rusted out. DCS had six (6) ceramic rods in stock. I'm still awaiting the other 30 ceramic rods from DCS... Some 90 days later.
I have faxed, emailed and telephoned DCS at least 10-12 times because parts sent were for other grills and not mine. The parts/warranty department is stunning in failing to address warranty support and sub-standard performance prevails at DCS.
This was a great company at one time. DCS was all about quality and while at a high price, that investment in a quality grill was the result of an excellent product.
Today, DCS is part of a company ran overseas with cheap parts and a useless warranty. Parts will fail at once and construction is cheap and inferior.
Consider a WEBER grill or a VIKING grill instead. Both of their grills are constructed (for the time being) with quality parts and both are American firms. More often than not, parts supplied from China tend to be inferior due to cheap labor and inferior supplies.
DCS is no longer the same quality firm it once was and avoiding DCS or Paykel & Fisher (same firm) products will serve you well.
