| nickscarano's Full Review: Panasonic DVD-RP82 DVD Player |
We were in a regular big box electronic store, their going out of business sale, final day, and we needed a new dvd player. looking over the racks, nothing good was left. My wife pointed up, and said what is that?? Hidden behind another was a lone Panasonic RP82, probably stashed back there by an employee or customer coming back for it. With a closeoutr price of 30 bucks, i bought it. I had no idea what a beautiful piece of euipment i had, and this was 2003, and it still stands out today, 2007. Panasonic used some features in this, the highest model of the RP series. A Faroudja chip was used for extreme picture quality. Faroudja processing feature is with diagonal lines. Faroudjas test patterns show that the Faroudja chip reduces jaggies with diagonal lines, where other processors fail. The RP82 has video deinterlacing that will beat any other player in its class played on a progressive TV. You can not beat the superior decoder in the RP82. No chroma bug, excellent playback.
It also plays every disc i throw at it. SVCD is not even reported as a supported format and they play brilliantly. DVD AUDIO never really took off as predicted, but i can play it. All 5.1 connections have to be nade to a receiver for it to work, but when it does, look out!!
One flaw reported by many owners of this player is the H02 ERROR. I did not subject this to any unreasonable use, never even moved it, and after 9 months, I got the "H02" error. Net research shows a dead or non spinning motor. Many reported a fix, so i opened up the cover, gave it a push start, and it has been working ever since. Maybe some dirt or dust clogging up the extra sensitive drive path, i dunno.
