If you don’t want to change discs often, the Sony DVP-C670D can be your solution. It is a five-disc changer with both Dolby Digital and DTS decoders built-in.
The front panel has 5 buttons numbered one through five that you can use to select the disc with one push of a button. It also features menu control buttons on the front panel, headphone jack with volume control, buttons to control the playback.
The player is quite slim and, as usually is the case with SONY products, looks very nice. Ditto the remote, which allows you to control different brands of receivers and TVs and has jog/shuttle control with joystick in the middle of it and keys that glow in the dark.
In addition to the five-CD changer, the player has both Dolby Digital decoder and DTS decoder built-in with 5.1 output on the back panel. So let’s talk about the back panel now.
All SONY DVD players don’t suffer from the deficit of inputs – no cost cutting here. The C670D has: two S-Video outputs, two composite video and two analog audio outs (2-channel), one analog audio input (L/R), one component video out, both digital coaxial and optical outs (Dolby Digital and DTS compatible), a front headphone jack with a volume control (front panel), S-Link control input, mega control and a Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1 channel analog output.
In case you are going to use the built-in DTS or Dolby Digital decoder, you can control the delay between the channels and other parameters from the remote. I prefer to have the receiver/sound system to do the decoding – this way you can use it for other sources plus you only have one cable (digital optical or coaxial) going form the player to the receiver instead of 6 in case you use the built-in DTS decoder or DD decoder.
The player plays DVD-Video discs, CD-Audio and Video CD. As is the case with other SONY DVD players, the picture and sound that C670D produces are excellent. Even when connected through the composite video out, the picture is detailed and does not loose detail even in dark areas. The S-Video and component out improve the edge definition and contrast.
The player’s frame-by-frame, SmoothScan and SmoothSlow (three speeds for high-speed and two speeds for low-speed search in both directions) modes allow you to study your favorite movie fragments. It also has a bit-rate and layer indicators and a Center Channel Equalizer, which allows you to boost the center channel sound level to be able to hear the dialogues better, supports DVD-Text and CD-Text and allows you to name discs through the “Disc Memo” feature.
Other features include repeat mode (disc, A-B), shuffle (random play), programmed playback, “resume” function with advanced parental control (can be set individually for 200 discs!), playback memory for 200 discs (remembers your settings), Digital Cinema Sound modes, Virtual Enhanced Surround Sound (simulates surround sound using just 2 speakers).
Additionally, you get Digital Video Enhancer, bookmark, strobe playback, picture memory, video equalizer with 5 factory presets and one custom setting, a screensaver (to preserve your TV screen when left in "Pause" mode), it also supports standard DVD features (soundtrack select, menu language select, subtitle select, 4:3 and 16:9 support (4:3 pan and scan, 4:3 letterbox, 16:9 widescreen), multiple camera angles, etc.).
The SONY DVP-C670D is a good choice if you need a five-disc DVD/CD changer with both Dolby Digital and DTS decoders built-in.
