Pros: Great picture quality, slim chassis, easy to use, inexpensive.
Cons: Only 1 set of analog audio outputs.
The Bottom Line: This DVD player is a great choice unless you need progressive scan, optical digital out, or extensive front-panel controls.

| vespanidus's Full Review: Sony DVP-NS315 DVD Player |
This is a fairly basic DVD player, but it's cheap, it gets the job done, it has a component-video output, and it's a Sony, which are the main features I was looking for in a DVD player.
Picture looks great through the component video output. However it did freeze up once and shut down when it hit a scratched part on one of my friend's battered DVDs, I don't know if other DVD players are better at handling scratched or scuffed disks, though, since this is the first one I've owned.
The machine comes with a great remote control that makes navigating menus and playing disks a snap. Also the remote can control all the functions on my Sony TV that I might need to use when playing a DVD-TV on/off, Volume up/down, and TV/Video to switch the TV to its component video input. The unit itself has only basic controls-Power, Eject, Play, Stop, and Pause. The Play button itself is a big knob that can be twisted to either side, but it's not a jog/shuttle control, it just switches the player to the next track.
The DVP-NS315 can play DVDs, CDs, CD-R/RWs, VCDs, and probably DVD-R/RWs too. Oh, and MP3 CDs.
On the back there are 3 types of video outputs-composite, S-Video and component. There are two audio outputs-one set of analog L/R stereo outputs and a coaxial digital out. The fact that it has only one set of analog outs means you can't connect it to a stereo TV and a hi-fi system at the same time, unless your hi-fi system happens to have a digital reciever.
Its slim chassis was critical to me because stacked up, my SL-HF600 Beta VCR, my PV-VS4821 S-VHS VCR and the DVP-NS315 come right to the top of my small TV cabinet. A DVD player that was even slightly taller wouldn't have been able to fit.
