Pros: Easy to use, simple remote, plenty of features for the average user.
Cons: None so far. This player will last me for years, I think.
The Bottom Line: If you want to watch DVDs, there is no other player to consider, unless you want progressive scan. This player is a real bargain...and a winner!

| mrjeff39us's Full Review: Sony DVP-NS315 DVD Player |
I searched for 2-3 months for my first DVD player. I didn't know much of anything about the various manufacturers, models or features. I wanted to learn as much as possible before making my investment. I was stuck between the Toshiba 2800 and the JVC 300BK for awhile until I found this Sony.
As I rent DVD's and planned on joining Netflix, the precision 2 motor system on this player was very attractive to me(not to mention the player itself which looks great in my rack with its slim design)! After reading reviews here and elsewhere, it became apparent to me my search was over, the only thing left was to find the best price.
I got home from the post office with the player, took the player out of the box, hooked up the cables, plugged it in, loaded a DVD and was watching it all within 5 minutes. This player is simple to set up and use. No complicated settings to figure out: it sets itself up in about 30 seconds with a little input from the user. It plays rental and Netflix DVDs with NO skipping or pauses, no matter how scratched up they are. The picture quality is excellent, the sound quality is even better! Currently, I'm just using line cords. I will switch to the component video cords soon. I love the picture choices: Standard, Dynamic 1 or 2, or Cinema 1 or 2. You can change the picture settings while a movie is playing! Lastly, the remote is the best, easiest one I've have ever seen or used for any audio/video component. It's vitually idiot proof.
I did not buy this player for CDs or MP3 use so I can't comment on this.
Thanks to all the reviewers here and elsewhere for posting your experiences with this player. Your information was invaluable to me. I found mine on eBay, new and sealed-factory fresh for $79.99 plus $13.50 S&H, $93.49 total.
I could not be more pleased!
(Update, June 23rd 2003) I've had this player for a few months now. Everything is great so far. The only trouble I have is when a DVD has some smudges on it from human fingers/oils which are easy to wipe off. The laser can't read through them. Scratches are no problem unless they are very deep.
Also, there is something to be said for having faster fast-forward and reverse speeds such as the Panasonic RV32 does(5X). This Sony has only 2X fast-forward. I didn't go with the RV32 because of over-heating problems I read about from other reviewers with some of the Panasonic players.
All in all, flawless performance so far from this economy priced player. I am still very pleased.
Nov. 3rd, 2003. The player STILL performs flawlessly! I belong to Netflix(8 out at a time), Columbia House DVD Club and a couple of local rental places so the player gets used daily and constantly. If reliability is important to you(as it is to me), you can't go wrong with this or another Sony player. I have nothing negative to report whatsoever.
