| surferdude7's Full Review: RCA RC5240P Player |
The RCA RC5240P DVD player is an excellent choice for the price. I bought it from a local National Brand store on sale for $139.00.
This DVD player can be hooked up to any TV and give you an excellent picture quality. You can also play your music CDs, Video CDs and MP3 CDs from this DVD player.
***Important Note***
The specifications that you can find at Epinions with this DVD player show that there is no zoom. This is not correct, the DVD player I have is the same RC5240P and it has a 2x and 4x zoom.
They also show that it has Dolby Digital Decoder Built in. This is not correct, to get the true Dolby Digital 5.1 sound you must run it through a receiver made for it or a decoder box.
And last they show it as Digital Dolby and Pro Logic. It will also play DTS if you have a receiver or decoder for DTS.
Audio CDs & MP3 CDs
All DVD players will play your music audio CDs, but not all will play your MP3 music files from a CD.
This DVD player will play your MP3 music files on a CD that can give you up to 10 hours of music time on one CD.
The menu system is plain and simple but the sound from the MP3 files in a 5.1 speaker system is awesome.
Video CDs
This is something I havent gotten into but for those who are it will play your Video CDs.
Dolby 5.1 & DTS Sound
This DVD player does not have a decoder built-in to play Dolby 5.1 or DTS sound. It will play it through a receiver made for it or a decoder.
You must also have 5 speakers and a subwoofer to get the true Dolby 5.1 or DTS sound.
My Setup
For those who are curious here is my Home Theater System and setup.
I run the RCA RC5240P DVD player with one Fiber Optic cable to my Kenwood receiver and one S-Video cable to my Hitachi TV. That is all the connections that I want.
My Kenwood receiver is about 4 years old but it is a Dolby 5.1 receiver with 120 watts per speaker. (4 years ago no one made a DTS receiver.) My TV is a Hitachi Ultravision 60 inch screen TV. I have 5 satellite speakers made by JBL with a 150-watt power JBL subwoofer. The movies are crystal clear and the sound is earth shattering!
The Remote
RCA provides some of the nicest remotes as far a practical use.
The remote is made for the DVD player and you can program in one TV.
The buttons are all large enough where you dont have to worry about hitting two at the same time. The remote is also nice in size with the buttons located in good placement.
There are a lot of buttons on it in two different colors, purple and a type of red. Basically the purple buttons are for the DVD functions and the red buttons are for the TV functions.
Zoom
With this DVD player you can press the zoom button on the Remote and it will give a 2x zoom, press it again and it will give you a 4x zoom, press it a third time and it goes back to the original movie size.
When in a zoom you can maneuver the picture around by using the arrow keys on the remote.
In the 2x zoom the picture doesnt look to bad, in the 4x zoom it gets a little grainy.
The zoom can be used while playing a movie or while it is paused on a spot in the movie.
The Connections
This DVD player has any type of connection for any type of TV or 5.1 & DTS reciever.
For video you have the best connection available, of Component Video Jacks, for the second best connection you have an S-Video Jack and then there are two Composite Jacks. (RCA Jacks)
For the sound you have two left and two right audio RCA Jacks. For connection to a 5.1 or DTS receiver you have one optical and one coaxial jack. The optical is a fiber optics cable and that is your best connection, the coaxial needs a special coaxial cable made for digital.
The Menu
The menu can be brought up when there is no DVD in the player.
Here you can set your image or screen size from the standard size of 4x3 or the 4x3 Letterbox and the 16x9 Widescreen.
You can also pick what language you wish to see the menu in, create a password to keep the young ones out or set a rating of what is viewable with or without a password. Plus more!
Overall
I am very pleased with this DVD player, the picture quality is excellent and the Dolby 5.1 sound through my receiver is also excellent.
I highly recommend the RCA RC5240P DVD player
