Pros:A very quiet 60 decibels measured at 1 Foot.

Cons:None that I can find, although I have had it for just 4 days.

The Bottom Line: If "QUIET", Effective, Option loaded and Stylish is important, then Danby is what you're looking for. I've tried a couple brands and looked at half a dozen others.

The humidity on winter nights in the San Francisco Bay Area, in my home, averages between 70 and 83%. I needed a "QUIET" dehumidifier as it would be positioned approximately 6 feet from where I sit in my office (approximately 250 square feet)6-8 hours per night. I tried a Kenmore which I measured at 81 decibels at 1 foot distance, and a Hampton Beach from Home Depot which was measured at 77 decibels. They each did a good job at drying out the air, but so does every other manufacturer out there. That is of course what they are suppose to do. I returned them both because with a noise level like that they were obviously meant to go in the basement. If that is where your dehumidifier is to be placed than the kenmore, although noiseier, was much better built and more powerful.

I called different local retailers and quized them about noise levels on the products they sold including Whirlpool, DeLonghi, and General Electric. Every salesperson I talked to said they would never put one of these units in a room you are actually living in. The major complaint was the noise level.

I found the Danby web site accidently through a search. I had never heard of Danby appliances. What caught my attention was the 50 decibel noise rating claim, although It doesn't state at what distance that reading was taken. I ordered one from CompactAppliances. It arrived 8 days later. I turned it on. I measured the noise level at 1 foot and it was 60 decibels. At 6 feet it was 50 decibels. I had found a "Quiet" dehumidifier suitable for close quarter operation. It is also the best looking and the most option loaded of any dehumidifier that I actually owned or had looked at in all my window shopping. It has 2 adjustable air exhaust ports. One is in the front top of the grill above the intake which blows horizontal and if you don't like that it has a second port on top next to the liquid crystal touchpad display which blows vertical. The display includes the current temperature, the current humidity and the humidity setting you are trying to reach. It has 2 fan speeds and you can run the fan by itself if you wish. The manual states that room temperature should be at least 60 degrees for efficient operation but mine works at 54 degrees room temperature very efficiently. It has 2 recessed handles on the top of the side panels which makes it easy to pick up and move. It of course comes with casters if you wish to use them. Last but not least it does what it is meant to do, and that is dry the air. Check out the Danby web site. You won't be disappointed.

One more thing I'd like to mention. "Quiet" to one persons ears is a jet airplane to someone else. You must have a reference point to understand the meaning of the word "Quiet." All of the reviews that I read have stated that, "it is rather noisy" or "it is pretty quiet" which tells you next to nothing for the reasons stated above. I measured these units with a decibel meter. A normal room conversation is about 65 decibels. Danby is also the only manufacturer that listed a decibel rating on their web site. I now know why. It really is "Quiet" I can only surmise that other manufacturers do not list this very important standard beacause they don't want you to know how noisy they really are.
