| never_again989's Full Review: Danby DDW396 22 in. Portable Dishwasher |
Sure, washing dishes is not that difficult. However, finding the time is another story. Also, I am clean-freak on the molecular level. Thus, my reasoning for spending money on what some of my friends consider a non-vital appliance.
I've owned this Danby dishwasher for over a year and it has yet to give me a single reason to complain. It is a truly beautiful, well-made, easy-to-use appliance. It does what its supposed to. And at under $150, it was within my strained student-budget.
The appliance is very easy to set up, provided you have the proper facet. My apartment is a very old house with few upgrades since the 70's. I had to install a new kitchen facet. Installing a new facet for the first time is about the most tedious task I have ever tackled. Make sure your new facet will connect to the Danby attachment.
Once the facet was installed, I was washing dishes in about 2 minutes. Some important points: be careful with the facet attachment (see "ball bearing explosion"), never use more than a quarter-sized amount of detergent, and you might want to consider purchasing a brush to scrape off the excess food before you place dishes inside the washer. My friend says it's stupid to buy a dishwasher if you're going to pre-wash by hand, but I have no problem doing this, because my dishes come out super clean and disinfected, thanks to Danby's Sani-Wash feature. I personally believe this will prolong the life of the washer. Also, cleaning the washer every month or so is a good idea. I use vinegar and a soft wash cloth. It's important to clean the filter above the drain. This will keep food particles from shortening the life of your Danby.
The machine has pre-wash, long cycle and a short cycle settings. I typically use the long cycle. My dishes, pots, pans and silverware come out looking outstanding. Unless you leave the dirty dishes in the sink for a week (which I never do), yours will too. Jetdry works well with this machine and is recommended.
Finally, about the capacity. This washer can handle quite a large load for its size. However, since it does fit on a counter top, you will not be able to wash more than half the capacity of a full-sized dishwasher.
Overall, I would whole-heartedly recommend this machine. It seems perfectly suited for dorms, apartments and any dwelling with a small kitchen. In my exhaustive research, I found it to be the best of the portable dishwashers.
