ohmmoose's Full Review: Danby DDW396 22 in. Portable Dishwasher
Please read all of the reviews before considering this product. I bought this unit because there is absolutely no way or room for a portable or built in unit in my studio apartment. A countertop model was my only choice.
First, if you follow the instructions, you shouldn't have any trouble hooking this up. Please know that you have to have a special kind of faucet. To check your faucet, go look and see if you can unscrew the aerater at the end - if you can, there should be threads. If you have a threaded (male) connection you will be able to attach the adapter that comes with the unit. If not you will have to have a plumber come out and replace the faucet so that you can attach the adapter.
The hose that attaches to the unit is a bit short - you'll need to have the unit sit fairly close to your sink. It's a good height and should fit under most normal cabinets when you put it on your kitchen counter.
I do like the styling. It fits in well with my kitchen appliances. I like the clean white look. It's easy to clean the outside of the appliance and of course the inside cleans itself. There is a filter screen inside the unit under the dish rack that needs to be removed and cleaned (just rinse it in the sink) after use.
There are several cycles to choose from - a rinse only, a long wash and a short wash. There is also a button to push to heat the rinse water up to 160 degrees for a sani-wash as they call it. This was the feature I really liked, since my hot water isn't all that hot.
There is also a spot for putting in a rinse product like jet dry - which I thought was a nice touch on such a small and inexpensive unit.
The machine worked beautifully for the first 6 months, and I was thrilled with the quality of the cleaning job that the machine did. It then started to leak a bit. I just put a folded up towel under the side that leaked and kept using it. I have now owned it for 10 months and my small leak is a lake. There is a window in the middle of the door (why, I don't know because you can't see into the unit because it's too dark anyway). The gasket is shot, and the leak is coming from there.
I was told by a local repair shop I could bring it in for repair, but it's awfully heavy - so my choices are take it in for repair, hire someone to come to the apartment for a minimum charge of about 1/2 of what the unit is worth or just buy a new one
I'm thinking of trying a different brand - the concept is great - for those of us in small apartments this is sometimes the only choice. I wish I could recommend this unit, because when it was working it was great - but only you can decide if it's worth buying one every year, getting it fixed every year or living with Lake Dishwasher...
When the dishes are starting to pile up, the Danby Countertop Dishwasher will provide functionality and convenience. Great for small kitchens with a l...More at Target
