chalgyr's Full Review: Dead or Alive 4 for Xbox 360
The Dear or Alive series has been around for some time, known for its fast fighting engine and female heavy list of fighters. That is what this game is - a one-on-one fighting game. This version of it has been out for some time, and can be acquired fairly inexpensively now as an Xbox 360 classic.
Graphics: This is an older game in the Xbox 360 collection, but still a very good one. The movement is fluid and fast and the backgrounds are colorful and in many ways they can be interacted with. You have to sometimes worry about a car, or electric ropes or flights of stairs you might get kicked down. By the current standards of the Xbox 360 library it may not be the sharpest game on the market, but it still holds up quite well in this department.
Sound and music: All of the proper grunts and crashes are here, though the voiceovers are still in Japanese for the most part, which annoys me just a bit but there are subtitles on it. The music is good and appropriate - often upbeat and seemingly appropriate for the local scenery.
Game play: Overall pretty good. The combat is fast and furious - environments will be broken, foes will have their heads kicked in and everything just feels appropriately lethal. I like fighting games - and loved the Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter games, but where as some of those matches could drag out for extended periods of time, it seems as though most matches in Dead or Alive 4 end fairly quickly, which helps to make it feel a bit unique.
Intangibles: There are some extra modes, which help to expand the game play, and there are storylines, though they are somewhat loose, for each character in order to encourage playing with various characters. There are some unlockables as well, which is always big with me. All of that said, there is no online mode, and there are fighting games with a good deal more unlockable content and I would have liked to have seen more here.
Overall this is a fun game, and a good diversion for a short period of time. Considering the price, it is a pretty good bargain. Dear or Alive 4 shows its age at times, but for the most part does a good job of providing entertainment at a good price. If one-on-one fighting games are a gaming genre that interests you, this one may well suit you. As an aside - the game is all about violence, but it is not terribly explicit in the blood and gore category. However, the female characters do tend to be somewhat scantily clad for those who are sensitive to that sort of thing. I would give the game 8 out of 10 considering the bargain price, four out of five stars if you stack it up to current releases.
