chris_toobsdkb's Full Review: Definitive C/L/R 2500 Center Speaker
Definitive Technology, probably not a company many people have heard about but a company known for high quality products at very reasonable prices. This speaker is ideally used in a surround sound environment as the center channel, but can be used as pretty much any speaker in a 5.1 or 7.1. The 2500 features Definitives solidly built cabinets, a cloth "sock" covering the drivers and cabinet, and piano black (or cherry) end caps. Inside you will find a 1" aluminum dome tweeter with a silk surround, two 5 1/4 cast basket (meaning the metal was poured in a molding, not stamped out of a machine) polypropelene cones with buttyl rubber surrounds and dust caps and to round things out, an 8" actively powered subwoofer, featuring a 150 watt (rms) amplifier. Its quite a bit of goods stuffed into a moderately sized cabinet. It weights around 40 pounds and can sit on a shelf horizontally or vertically. If you place it in a cabinet or on a shelf and need to compensate for the difference in height, all you have to do is install the supplied "feet" and bam, better imaging. Finishing off the speaker itself, the cabinet is ported (slot, on the rear), gives you the flexibility of tri-wiring (bi-wiring is ideal), and due to the built in sub there obviously is a power cord, volume control and Definitives red light of love to show you when it is turned on.
Down to the speakers performance, it is nothing short of obnoxious for a center channel. Clean dialoge, perfect timbre matching to other def techs (and for that matter, probably most other "natural" or "flat" sounding speakers) and bass that will make you laugh, I love this speaker. When I first hooked this big boy up, I actually chuckled when I played some music with bass. I wanted to hear how it performed by itself, so I disconnected the other speakers. I popped in a couple of my favorite recordings, particulary bass heavy, dialogue rich and clean/well recorded recordings- Eric Clapton Unplugged, Norah Jones, 311, Monsters Inc., Master and Commander, Etc. Everything sounds great. Honestly. I have listened to tons of brands of speakers (I sell them:) and I can do nothing but rave about this speaker. If you like to listen to multi channel music (a good one to try out- Eagles, Hell Freezes Over DTS- bass guitar located in the center channel) this is the speaker for you. If you want a center channel for movies that puts out the cleanest dialoge possible (for the price of course), adds depth to action and rounds out the front sound stage, then pick this speaker up.
Things that I dislike about the 2500-...the ONLY thing that I can think of is that the power cord is not removable/replacable/upgradable. Also, when you initially plug the amp pulls a bunch of current, causing the sub to pop. This is normal, but is kind of annoying. Also if you put your head about 6 inches away from the sub, even when the amp is off, it emits a little bit of sound. Very minor. I know that none of this attributes effect performance, so I am just griping.
I highly recommend you pick up this center channel if you are considering purchasing ANY Definitive Technology Tower, Supertower, Studio Monitor, or frankly, any DefTech that has the same size (5 1/4) driver. Visit your nearest DefTech dealer to pick one up.
I have had my C/L/R 2500 for about two months now, running it with the BP7002's (not on this website for some reason- I would like to know how to submit product??) as well as the BP2X for rears with the Supercube 1 adding a little more low end.
