netwizard1001's Full Review: Dell Axim X50v Pocket PC
I purchased my Dell Axim X50v for myself on 12/14/2004 for Christmas. I was lucky to catch dell having a sale and purchased it for only $424. I am a student and use it regularly for notetaking in college.
Power: The dell Axim X50v has a 624Mhz Intel® XScaleTM PXA270 Processor. This thing flies whether you are listening to music and surfing the net at the same time or just switching from application to application. Ive heard other people say that the Dell lags when running multiple applications. This can occur and probably will. The way to avoid lag is to go into the power settings and change it to Maximum performance. This will utilize all 624Mhz. Since this I have never had a problem since.
Wi-fi: I absolutely love the built-in wireless wi-fi card. It allows me to surf the net anywhere there is a wireless router.
Windows Media Player 10: Everything about Windows Media Player 10 is awesome except for one little thing. When attempting to play a video it doesn't bring up the picture fast enough and by then the sound has already started. However, after about 4 seconds it corrects itself and everything is groovy again.
Screen: This P.D.A. has a 3.7 inch TFT Color 16-bit, Touch Sensitive, Transflective LCD that cranks out a whopping 480 x 640 resolution at 65,536 colors (VGA). This resolution makes pictures and games more vibrant than ever and much more enjoyable.
Graphics: To go along with the beautiful display, this P.D.A. comes with an Intel® 2700G multimedia accelerator with 16MB video memory. A graphics card of this size is unheard of for this price.
Memory: The Dell Axim X50 comes with more memory!
RAM: 64MB SDRAM
ROM: 128MB Intel StrataFlash® memory
This is enough to put several applications and extras on your P.D.A. without the use of the expansion slots.
Battery: I believe that the battery is the only bad thing about this P.D.A. When it is in full use with brightness to the max, wi-fi and bluetooth enabled, and listening to music, I only get about 2 and a half hours on the standard battery (1100 MaH). Although you can upgrade to a 2200M MaH battery which should double the life on a single charge.
Dual Memory Slots: The dual memory slots in the Dell Axim X50v is one of the main points that really sold me. With these slots you can expand your memory to over 4 Gigabytes!!! I currently have a 1 Gigabyte Compact Flash which provides me with plenty of storage for over 200 songs and about 20 videos. The Dell Axim X50v is also set up to accept the new Compact Flash 2 cards. Which are essentially scaled down hard-drives.
Handwriting Recognition: The handwriting recognition on this P.D.A. has got to be one of the best around. It can recognize just about anyones handwriting, even if it is a bit messy like mine. I also like the fact that you can choose in what direction you would like to write. You can choose to write straight, at a slant, or completely sideways (Landscape view).
In The Box: The standard package includes: Software CD-Roms, Charger that lets you charge without the connection to the computer, slip on case, 1 stylus, and instruction manuals.
Charging Cradle: When the box comes directly to your door you get a Charging Cradle included. This charging cradle is an excellent one because you dont have to have the power connected to it at all times. It also looks nice and has a second charging bay for an extra battery.
Dell Extras: If you want to add more accessories to your P.D.A. Dell has the optional RhinoSkin Aluminum HardCase, a variety of other cases, an optional 2200 MaH battery, an auto power adapter that lets you charge your P.D.A. in the car, as well as a wireless keyboard for faster input plus much much more.
Buttons: The buttons to activate the Wi-Fi/bluetooth and record buttons are placed a little awkwardly. There have been numerous times when I have picked up the unit and turned it on accidentally due to an accidental button push.
Design: The looks, although not important to me but should not be overlooked. I will admit this P.D.A. looks better than any others I have seen (just about every other P.D.A.). And unlike the Zire models, the paint will not chip off easily.
Overall: The best and most powerful P.D.A. you can buy. With its great looks, wonderful software, and numerous capabilities, Its one awesome P.D.A.
