| boughtall's Full Review: Dell DJ (15 GB) MP3 Player |
I have to say congratulations to Dell with their first attempt at an MP3. They have managed to do something Apple has been unsuccessful at so far, make a great hard drive player for less than $200. This product will definitely give Apple a run for their money. It is easy enough to figure out and the sound quality is excellent. There is also great battery life and in line remote so you wont have to take the player out of your pocket or bag.
What You Get In The Box
Dell digital jukebox DJ
carrying case
in line remote
earbuds
Musicmatch software
rechargeable battery (non removable)
charger
USB connector (1.1 or 2.0)
Design
The Dell DJ has a great design to it. The frame of the DJ is made of metal, which makes the units seem very solid. the button configuration is very easy to understand. There is a wheel placed directly in center of the unit. This will allow you to scroll through songs with ease. Even though the IPOD can scroll faster with its scrolling device the Dell DJ does a good job with scrolling. There are also five giant buttons on the front for the normal playing features. All of these feature combing to make choosing and selecting a song on the Dell DJ very simple.
Include in the box is also an in line remote. This allows you to put the DJ in its case and still easily select songs. The only down side to the remote is that there is no LCD on it. This means you cannot find what song you are on without taking the unit out. This is the only complaint I had with the remote. It is just as functional as the normal device buttons and will not disappoint you.
Audio
The audio quality on this player is great. With the included headphones, you may be a tad disappointed, though. Dell makes a great product and includes cheap $5 headphones. I suggest shelling out $30 on a great pair that will give you the sound quality this device is capable of. When you listen to music there is almost no distortion and background noise. That is great. Also you can change the audio settings on the device with the equalizer. This is a great feature to have on an MP3 player.
Battery
The Dell DJ comes with an already installed rechargeable battery. The only downside with the battery is it cannot be removed. This means if your battery happens to go dead you cannot listen to anymore music. I highly doubt this will happen, though. The battery life on this MP3 player is between 16 and 20 hours. This will definitely last you a few days of on and off listening. Also, the player only takes about 6 hours to fully charge. This battery life is even more impressive than the IPOD's.
Sofware
Using the included software is required for transferring music files. You can transfer normal data files such as MPEG and AVI and anything else you can think of by treating the hard drive as a removable disk drive. The include software is Musicmatch and it isn't as great as it could be. The reason for this is because Dell was afraid of people stealing songs so you are unable to transfer your purchased songs to another computer. This is my main complaint about the software as the IPOD software seems to be a big easier to use and has less drawbacks.
My Recommendation
I suggest buying this MP3 player if you don't want to be like everyone else who has an IPOD. Also, you can laugh at all your friends who spend $100 more for something and yours is just as good as theirs. This is a great product for those of you who have a PC. If you happen to have a Mac this product is not for you because there is no firewire. I would choose this over an IPOD any day.
