Not A Bad Way To Throw Away 250 Bucks

Pros: Good value. Good support.

Cons: Firmware blows. No line out. Muddy bass even with good headphones.

The Bottom Line: Although I like the DJ, I'm not sure that I would buy it again. I bought my wife an iPod mini and I like it much better. Tons more accessories.

First of all, let me say that I'm a geek (occupation, not lifestyle). I purchased the DJ 20 to use as a music system while on the road on my motorcycle and when I run. Now, common sense should have told me that a hard-drive based MP3 player may not be exactly what I'm looking for. The DJ is very prone to hard drive errors when exposed to any type of vibration or shock...a real minus when either running or riding. That being said, it is a decent player. I have about 70 GB of tunes and I (like many of my friends with high capacity MP3 players) found that 20 GB of tunes is overkill unless the player is your sole source of music...oh, you think you need that much space...but most people really won't use it.

My two biggest complaints about the DJ are:

1. The bass (even with my upgraded Sony bud headphones) is severely lacking. Adjusting the EQ to pump up the bass ends up muddying the music.

2. There is no line out capability. While you can tinker with the volume and EQ to get the DJ to produce acceptable sound out of another device (such as a home stereo amp), there is nothing like the quality of a line out feed.

Much to my surprise, I am impressed with the support I have received on the DJ. The hard drive ate itself and I figured that it was going to be a huge hassle getting it repaired. But when I called Dell, they told me that they were shipping out a new unit that day and all I had to do was pop the damaged unit in the provided box and send it back (on their dime). Kudos to Dell.
