| jacksquat4u's Full Review: Dell Dimension 4600C (D46CRM) PC Desktop |
I bought my 4600 in October of '03. At the time it had a 2.8 Ghz P4 with hyperthreading, 512MB of RAM, an 80GB hard drive, DVD and CDRW drives, and a Nvidia 5200 with 256MB of video memory. It was a hairy chested pavement eater of a machine.
I have never had a problem with this computer. No freezing, no hesitation or lagging when I have multitudes of programs running or am playing system intensive games (remember to spybot and adaware your computers regularly, kids).
Games are the main reason I bought this machine because at the time an XPS system with exactly the same features was about $1500 to $2000 more than this little 4600. I think that with the 17" flat screen I paid a total of $1300 or so (a steal!).
I love the frontside USB ports and headphones jack. Actually, I really love the headphones jack--when I plug in my headphones the speakers actually shut off. No fiddling with my speaker knobs so that I can give my roommates some peace and quiet.
Just recently I upped my RAM to 2 GB and am ready to purchase a new PCI express video card and I think I can get another couple of years of good gaming out of this machine.
One thing I wish this computer had is an extra 5.25" drive slot so that I could put in a multi-card reader rather than have yet another USB cable dangling over my desk.
Why spend all the extra money on an XPS when we all know it's just for looks. If looks are that important to you buy a 4600 and go out and spend $100 on a really cool case with LEDs and ten fans.
