With 3 users in the house, we needed a second computer for email, homework and surfing. Space and portability were also issues, so a lap top was the perfect solution.
I searched hi and low, and even looked at used laptop. Since we didn't need extreme portability or long battery life, this Dell was the best deal.
It came with free shipping and a wireless card. The celeron M isn't a speed demon, but we have dial up anyway, so we're used to slooooooooooooow. Although I don't have any immediate need for wireless today, its nice to have that option, especially when we travel or if we upgrade our isp.
The basic battery is good for 2 hours, if you need more than I suggest the upgrade battery and keep the standard as the spare. I did get a chance to use it one night during a blizzard induced power outage. I used it for over an hour and had about 1/2 battery left. My neighbors with road runner cable service couldn't go on line. I could. So much for speed.
The 1000 has 3 usb plugs in the back and 1 serial port. It comes with a cd/dvd burner but haven't burned with it yet. That does not include a floppy drive, but with a cd and a thumb drive, I haven't used floppies in years anyway.
Since this is a economy notebook, the software package is limited. It comes with windows xp and had a bonus wordperfect program. I thought it was a full office suite, but it only opened as a word processer. I solved this by putting my office 2000 program on it. That runs fine and plenty of memory is available.
We are very happy with this laptop so far.
