Updated Review on Bottom
I purchased this laptop for $1563. Specs: 3.06Ghz w/ HT, UXGA, 512MB RAM, 40GB HD, Truemobile1300, Geforce FX 5200 64MB, CD/RW DVD Combo Drive
This Laptop when playing Direct X 8.0 and lower games is OK but when It comes to Direct X 9.0 it is completely Horrible. One example when I tried to play HALO on it I could barely move around in the campaign mode due to so much laggggg. I was very dissapointed in this thinking that all the good things in this laptop would be great but when playing direct X9 it is just plain ugly my PC with 2.66GHz, 256MB Ram, and a 64MB Geforce 4 MX 420 plays Halo better than my 5150. So you figure out the difference. I was extremely dissapointed and am really considering returning this laptop to go and buy a 8600 with 128MB ATI card that is guaranteed to play Halo.
Everything else in the laptop is good though. Battery Life is 5:00 Hours, wireless card in really good. CD drive bit noisy. Speakers much louder than IBM ones and still do amaza me. UXGA is incredible just beautiful when watching DVD's and playing games on high resolutions(Direct X8 games) keyboard is very solid and firm. Won't break easily, Touchpad is something to get used to but overall this laptop was ok. If Dell just put the ATI card in this model then they would seriously have all laptop owners eating out of their hands.
Ok People Its been 1 year and Im having just more and more problems with this system. 1 Week ago I was just sitting down and using the laptop and all of a sudden it died on me. I tried everything. I then noticed it only shut off when I applied pressure on a certain area or moved the screen. The Problem at hand is acutally due to damage to the motherboard from excessive heat, (thanks to its design flaws and 1 fan). Thankfully I still have my warranty and will definetely extend the warranty. Also BIG NEWS. This Problem will probably most definetely apply to all the Inspiron models with the same Design as this one, those include the 5100, 5150, 1100, 1150.. and anything else using the same casing.
Also Another word on Dell's Customer Service. After sending in my laptop and having it repaired in and returned in 3 days (over the weekend) I recieved 2 packages. 1 contained my laptop and the other contained someone else. The "Geniouses" at Dell sent me some other customers Inspiron 1150. I called in and let Dell know but they couldnt help anyone because there entire system was down. They are still trying to call the delivery copmany to arrange for a pickup. Honestly Dell how do u do that.
The only system out there on Dells product line that I see worthy of my money ever again at this moment (12/8/04) is the Inspiron 9200, its lightweight and powerful and possibly the 8600 which is their oldest system out on the line now (which will definetely be taken off soon).
Ok now its year #2 and the system hasn't gotten any better, I've had to send in the system again for another repair of the same issue and fear that it is going to die again soon. (seems that the motherboard only lasts approximately 6 - 8 months) After I can no longer extend my warranty I will be fighting Dell to continue to repair this product as it seems that Dell is incapable of completely repairing the problem.
