| hdlo2025's Full Review: Dell Inspiron 600M (600MSAP) PC Notebook |
This is my second Dell Laptop (my first one was a Latitude model), and I haven been extremely happy.
As a computer technician, I see a lot of laptops throughout the course of a week. What has always impressed me about the Dell models has been their online support, and their warranty support. This particular laptop, though has had a lot of other good features about it. Here's a few areas in which I've been pleasantly surprised by my 600m:
1. Battery runtime. I purchased mine w/ an optional second battery (pull out the Dvd /cdrw and put in the extra battery). Fully charged, if I'm just doing email and browsing the web, or just anything non-disk or sound intensive, I can easily get over 7.5 hours of runtime on it. Start listening to mp3s, or crank the screen brightness up to max, though, and I still get about 4 hours.
2. Build quality. Hey, for the price, I'm happy. I'm pretty gentle with it, but I carry it everywhere in my Targus case, and it does get its share of bumps and bangs. I've had it for over a year now, and it's running strong, no cracks, dings, or ANY warranty work needed yet.
3. Speed. It's been remarkeably fast, considering it's a 1.4 ghz Centrino - based computer.
Okay, now the few things I'd like to see different on it:
1. The touch pad is occasionally wildly erratic - just flat out not moving the mouse anywhere near where I tell it to. Not a big deal, since I carry a usb mouse with me most times anyway.
2. No native linux drivers for the wireless nic. I think this is an intel problem, though, not a dell issue.
3. Kind of cheap of dell to make me buy the floppy and tv-out cables extra. I wasn't paying attention when I bought it, and it turns out these are extras. I picked them up on ebay.
Overall, I couldn't be happier for this price range. It's a great laptop, and it hasn't given me any real reasons for dissatisfaction. I'd say it's highly reccomended.
