| betsygirl2001's Full Review: Dell Inspiron 600M (600MSAP) PC Notebook |
I first started looking at Dell laptops in February. Having never owned a laptop before, I automatically gravitated toward the lower priced Inspiron 1100/1150. i began comparing computers on the Dell website, and quickly came to the conclusion that the 1150 was not upgradeable enough to be worth the cheaper price. Also, the standard processer was the Intel Celeron, and I knew that I wanted at least a Pentium 4. The Inspiron 600m initially attracted me because of its smaller size and lighter weight than the 1150. Also, for the vanity side of it, it offers cool covers for the back of the computer screen.
I ordered the 600m the evening of May 26, 2004. Despite the holiday weekend, it arrived before its estimated ship date. So I ordered it on a Wednesday evening, and received it the next Wednesday. That is fast!! Especially when you consider that it is put together in Malaysia.
Screen size and resolution was not something that I really considered in the ordering process, so I got the standard 14.1" XGA. The screen is a comfortable size and very sharp and clear. The resolution might make the icons and words a little to small for some people, but it is about right for me.
The processor is Intel Pentium M 1.5 ghz with 32 mb video. They offer an upgrade to 64 mb video, but my gaming needs are minimal, so I stuck with the base version.
The promotion that they offered at the time of my order allowed me to get a free optical drive upgrade from DVD-drive to the monular CD-RW/DVD combo. I have definitely enjoyed watching DVD's on this computer. The details are clear and crisp in the movie scenes. I also ordered the modular floppy disk drive. If I need to use a floppy disk, all I have to do is switch out the cd-rw/dvd combo and put the floppy drive in. That sure is a handy feature to have here at the end of the era of floppies.
I ordered this machine with the minimum amount of RAM in it, and then installed another 512 mb on my own. I saved $300 doing this on my own. The memory is easily accessible, and I didn't have a bit of problem getting a new memory chip in. It is upgradeable to 2 GB RAM.
I also ordered an optical mouse with this system, but have found the touchpad so easy to adjust to, that I have never used the mouse.
I have not had to use customer service yet, but I have heard a lot of bad things about it. I don't know that I would call Dell initially if I have a problem. Dell has discussion groups that seem to be efficient in getting problems solved. I guess they respond better when their dirty laundry is aired on a public forum. For all who own a Dell or are considering buying one, I highly recommend this site. I can't post the exact page, so go to dellcustomercaredotcom then click on community.
All in all, this computer is my dream machine and I hope that we have many happy years together.:)
