1) I did not use Dells Tech Support
2) The Laptop was a gift so I do not know the price.
I have owned both Dell and IBM laptops in the past 2 years, and would recommend an IBM laptop over the Dell, no matter which model.
Synaptic Touch Pad Gets in the way
The first thing I noticed about the Dell Laptop was the Synaptic Touch Pad.- You can't shut it off! (The touch pad is that annoying little rectangle in the middle of your keyboard.) I tried to uninstall this device and was unable to do so.
When you are typing an e-mail, your thumb may accidentally brush against the touch pad causing your cursor to jump to a new position within your e-mail. This was very annoying. I would frequently look up and realize I had been typing over a previous section of my e-mail.
The Cooling Fan
The fan for this system is UNDER and to the Right of the laptop. All laptops have a fan which cools them. If you choose to use an external mouse as I did, you will find the fan blowing hot air directly onto your right hand. (If you are left handed, you might not have this problem)After time, all the hot air was causing my hand to dry out.
The fan was also very loud, and I noticed the laptop was frequently very hot to the touch. I was not able to leave it running for an extended period of time.
I have a friend who works with both Dell and IBM computers. He confided that the Dell Laptops are frequently returned because the harddrive blew up. He stated the main cause for hardrive failure was the fans inability to properly cool the machine.
