| sublemon's Full Review: Dell TrueMobile 2300 Wireless Broadband Router (TM... |
I bought the 2300 router with my Dell laptop on the recommendation to stay within one brand when building a wireless network. That may have been solid advice but I soon discovered the router is anything but solid.
As Dell claimed, setup was a breeze. And I found that the router's range was pretty darn good, when it worked. The 2300's flaw is, however, that it works infrequently and gives up at the least convenient times. The first sign of trouble was when it periodically lost the wireless signal. No biggie, I thought, I will just hafta play online games wired to my modem.
A couple weeks after I first set-up the router it started to lose my internet connection once or twice a day. This increase to up to 6 times a day very quickly. I had to reset my router (in my basement) every time. This really made me angry. Whats the point of having a wireless network if I have to go down to the cold basement numerous times a day to get it to work.
Well it got far worse from there. First, the router randomally blocked certain websites. I disabled ALL firewalls and spent hours on the phone with Dell after these sites wouldn't show up on the wired LAN. After the whole ordeal I was sent a new router.
I hoped the new router would solve all my problems, but I was mistaken. I was able to surf to the websites I had been blocked from, but the other problem persisted.
The one solution that worked was a trip to Best Buy, where they were sold out of the WRT54G that I was looking for. Across the street at Circuit City, the Linksys model was in stock. Installation was as easy as Dell and the router proven to be rock-solid.
My advice: Unless you plan to go wireless very infrequently, stay as far a way from this shoddy piece as possible.
