| gosborn's Full Review: Dell Dimension 4400 (A-D0314) PC Desktop |
I work in the computer field and we have used Dells at work for about 5 years now. They are reliable machines and have a low incidence of failure. Some machines, like Packard Bell, had around a 35% failure rate. Dell is one of the best, around 3% failure rate. I have owned PC's by Zeos, Micron, and HP. They were all known as reliable companies and systems, under 7.5% failure rate. I would still buy any of those brands, but Zeos was bought by Micron. Micron in turn sold their PC business to a company that I haven't seen a track record for yet. The HP's have been very reliable but they quit providing SW disks with their computers, and the total SW reinstall CD is unacceptable to me.
I have read complaints about Dell's service, but I have read that about almost all big companies in any field. You just need to buy the most reliable item you can and hope to avoid service calls. I had also heard about noisy fans, but this PC is the quietest machine I have owned. I had also heard about rude sales people. The person I talked to saved me another $200 from the price I had built online.
My Dell 4400 P4 1.6 ghz. w/ 512 MB RAM, 64 MB nVidia video, SB Live audio, MS Office Small business, Win XP was purchased for a bit over 1100.00. I couldn't buy the SW and listed HW for that price, let alone the motherboard, modem, case, etc. I received it within a week of when I ordered it, it booted beautifully and has been running ever since.
Let's face it MS owns the mainstream computer world so we are stuck with PC's. Until Mac's or Unix run mainstream PC apps or MS is forced to support other OS's with their non-OS SW, we are stuck. And Dells are at least well built machines that won't disappoint you, so it's not a bad machine to be "stuck" with.
