| shredgirl's Full Review: Dell Dimension 4400 (A-D0314) PC Desktop |
I did extensive research before I made the decision to purchase my Dell Dimension 4400 Series and this is the best deal by far.
My experience with Dell was a positive one. My PC arrived earlier than expected and was safe and sound when I opened the box. The set up was quite simple. It took me around 15 minutes to be up and running. I had a little trouble setting up my MSN Broadband DSL modem because the computer did not recognize it. I am not a computer guru but I consider myself to be an advanced computer user and I have hooked up computers before so to me it was fairly easy. Dell supplies you with instructions so even a novice could work through it although it may take longer than 15 minutes.
I got the Pentium 4 processor at 1.6 GHZ (base offering for this model) Of course, you can upgrade the processor speed but I find 1.6 GHZ very sufficient and I am on the computer a lot, downloading media files, building websites, uploading photos, etc. I would highly recommend upgrading to at least 256 MB RAM and I would definitely without any hesitation upgrade to the 40GB hard drive. A hard drive is a like a closet for your PC and you can never have too big of a closet now can you? Also, be sure to spend the extra money for the upgraded video card (at least get the 64MB NVIDIA GeForce2 MX 4X AGP graphics card with TV-Out), very worth it.
So far the tech support has been good but the warranty coverage is a little high. I opted for the one year limited warranty which is included with the base price for the 4400 Series but you can always extend it later if you desire to do so.
One thing I did not like was that you only get a trial version of Image Expert and a partial version of Roxio Easy CD Creator. When you spend over $1,000 on a PC the least they can do is give you the full version of these applications. I was not too keen on Windows XP at first. It seems to run a little slower than Windows 98 but I am getting used to it and I am really starting to like it. It takes some getting used to if you are used to working on Windows 98, so don't get frustrated, it's just an adjustment period.
I recommend the Dell Dimension 4400 Series to someone who wants a fast, hi-tech machine and is interested in building websites, downloading video or mp3s, editing photos and playing games. For all intent and purposes, someone who is really going to make use of their PC, needs to have this one! The 4400 Series would probably be overkill for the person who just wants to surf the web or send e-mails.
