I purchased a dell two years ago. Through the test of time I have found my way to this computer system. Yes, its my third dell under one warranty. I was surprised when I got this replacement computer because it looked rugged. However, after going through two other computers that were manufactured by Dell I had my reserves.
I plugged the thing in and low and behold Dell loaded the operating system on the machine twice!!!! After reloading the OS and actually doing right. I must say the machine has performed well overall.
What it came with:
Windows Professional
Processor: Intel Pentium 4 with external clock speed of 100hz, maximum clock speed of 2000hz, and current clock speed set at 1700hz
Memory: Total slots 2, currently Dimm=256 (pc2100)
Hardware Config: CD ROM/Burner, Maxtor Hard Drive (60gb), Iomega Zip Drive (100mb), NVIDIA GeForce 2 MXMX 400 graphics card, 3Com EtherLink XL 10/100 PCI For Complete PC Management NIC, 56k Modem, 3 Total USB (2 back, 1 front), headphone jack in the front (panel in the front lifts up), svideo out, all the rest is typical junk.
Its a good PC (or at least I hope so, ive only had it 6 months so far). Its very easy to get into also!!! The entire case folds open and lays in a way that gives you the ultimate space to move around in. Not like most machines that the cover lifts off then you have to cram your hands into this tiny little space to move things around.
Customer Service:
Overall Dells customer service kicks butt!!!! Considering this is my third replacement system they have complied with my every wish, just to make me happy. Compared to other computer companies, these guys run circles around the competition. (I also own compaq, hp, gateway)
Tech Support:
If you know what your doing use the knowledge base, thats all those techs do when you call in. If you want the assurance of calling in and speaking to someone, thats always an option. They are very nice and patient. Here's soemthing that shocked me. We got disconnected and they actually called me back!!! What company does that? None that ive run into!!DONT upgrade to faster tech support, ive never had to wait more than 5 minutes to get a tech on the phone. Its not worth the extra money.
Heres the best part about tech support, its free for the life of the computer!!! Those other companies only offer tech support for 1 year, then you have to pay.
CONS:
They stopped giving people the three year warranty as part of the package deal. You have to now buy the upgrade. Before they just gave it to you already worked in with the computer. Its worth the extra money to get the extended warranty through dell. They do backup the product. If you plan on replacing the computer every year, then by all means dont get the extended warranty option. Once you buy the machine no matter where it goes or who owns it the machine has the warranty for that period of time. So if you want to resell the system and you have a two year warranty left on it, it makes a good selling point. Just check out Ebay and you can tell people that buy second hand would like comfort knowing they get a backup if something goes wrong.
Overall:
Buy a dell!!! Even though I had problems with my first two systems they really stand behind the product. This system seems better built than the last two I had (these where the dimension L800r systems). There is a huge difference when you compare the two systems.
About the price, i really didnt pay for this unit. I paid for one that was purchased two years ago. The purchase price then with a 17" monitor was 1200.00.
They dont offer this model anymore, but the similar model 4550 configured the same way is about 1300.00.
