Getting your butt kicked doesnt seem like a very fun idea but after playing Devil May Cry 3 it can be very enjoyable. DMC3 is possibly the best action game ever. Following the structure of old school games DMC3 will have players playing over and over again. The challenge over all is fairly difficult for a seasoned action gamer but everyone else should try easy mode before trying to beat it on normal. One thing that made the game so enjoyable is the fact that the difficulty will change from time to time in the twenty missions of the game. One minute Dante will be able to rush through a mission and another will have the player trying and trying for over twenty minutes. The bosses themselves are rather difficult and all have plenty of moves at their arsenal. Some of the earlier bosses are even harder then some last bosses of other games. Not only are the bosses challenging but so are the minions under them, twenty-four types to be exact, and all of them are unique with their own tactics, attacks and evasion techniques.
Dantes brother is trying to resurrect a tower that has the portal which connects to the Demon world which their dad, the legendary dark knight Sparta, closed off just a millennium ago. Dante, destined to pi$$ his brother off, goes to stop him. Dantes adventure is a very well told story that involves humor, love, dysfunctional families, and some very interesting characters. Dante is as cocky as ever and comes off as a badass but sometimes his coolness becomes a bit cheesy. The cut scenes in the game are incredible. Somewhere between Dante running down a tower blasting monsters with his dual hand guns and him dodging bullets left and right youll notice that these are some of the best cut scenes found in any game. On top of that, the voice acting is spot on and enhances the story.
DMC3 is action packed and runs smoothly on 60 frames per second. The combo system can be used in many creative ways. One example can be Dante slashing a demon, throwing him up in the air, shoot him with his handguns then jump up and slash the demon to the ground and this is just in the starting of the game. Other moves in the game are just incredibly cool to perform. Some have Dante riding a demon, others have him slashing up to four guys with his sword, Rebellion, and sometimes he just swings around poles for the he11 of it. The combo system is all about style and how many moves you can string together, at first it might seem to pull of long combos but couple of hours with the game and Dante, excuse my French, will be blasting more caps in demons then a gang war in East LA. The combo system grades you and by the moves you use and the way you string them together. This game isnt a button mashing game; combos require quick reflexes and quick thinking. The game has five melee weapons to use and each has its own special ability, strength and weakness. Abilties can also be bought to make the weapons stronger. Abilities that can be bought consist of new moves or new abilities like double jump. Guns can also be upgraded to cause more damage. Another thing that makes the game even more challenging is when ever a healing item is bought the price raises making it more expensive next time around, this definitely adds more depth to the game.
The music in the game consists of a mix of heavy and death metal with deep vocals. While they might not be enjoyed by everyone it fits very well with the non stop action.
The controls at first might be a little difficult to get use to, especially the targeting system, but after a few tries the controls feel smooth as a babys bottom. L2 and R2 let you switch between guns and melee weapons.
The visuals themselves are very polished and great to look at. DMC3 is pushing the PS2 to its limit with rare cases of slow down. Other than that everything looks great, cut scenes look great, facial expressions look great, environments look great, even Dantes coat looks great.
DMC3 is definitely one of the best action games ever. Unfortunately due to its steep learning curve some gamers, casual and hardcore, might be alienated form trying it out. For anyone looking for great action, deep story, awesome visuals, and hard as hell difficulty should definitely look into DMC3.
