Over the almost 40 years of drinking the number one hard liquor I have had is Scotch Whisky. I would also say that I have had more Dewar's than any other brand. One thing I have noticed if I ask for a scotch on the rocks without mentioning brands, the tenders on Long Island reach for a bottle of Dewar's White Label Blended Scotch Whisky. Every bar I have ever been in in the states has it. I'll note that Cutty Sark is also used as a base Scotch but its Dewar's I see MUCH more often and it is better.

Dewar's is an economically priced Scotch whisky that tastes good. It has been around for over 150 years and is the best selling Scotch blend in the US. It's just over 100 years ago that they released the "White Label".

My two scotch drinks are "on the rocks", preferably crushed, and a Sweet Rob Roy which is a mix of scotch and Sweet Vermouth. Don't forget my cherry. In both cases Dewar's is just fine for this guy.

On occasion I'll have a shot of the stuff neat but it's on crushed rocks that I best enjoy it. After a few stirs and the ice melts a bit and releases the full scotch taste, the drink is perfect for my liking.

The honest truth is I have not compared Dewar's against other Scotches. On occasion I'll have Johnnie Walker Red and Black and Chivas but I can honestly say Dewar's is just fine for me. It's also a bit less expensive so that works just fine too.

The Taste

When I pour this relatively clear with golden tone drink straight into a shot glass and have it that way it's a bit fiery on the way down but not bad to where it's burning. That's after a nose that picks up a combo of sweet and smokey elements. The blend of taste and reaction to the senses is interesting and it continues with each smooth tasting sip. It's the scotch flavor I enjoy and it doesn't fade after a few sips. It was an acquired taste and I do have to be in the mood for it, but when I am, nothing else will satisfy my yearnings for a stronger liquor like Dewar's does.

The Finish

As stated earlier I like Dewar's on the rocks, crushed preferable and also in a Sweet Rob Roy (Scotch and Sweet Vermouth) so I don't always get the clean/dry finish that it gives on its own. On occasion I have had it with Ginger Ale in the Summer. It's good sweetened along with a slight ginger flavour.

It's funny, this is a social drink to me. I rarely have it at home. In the dead of winter I prefer a brandy in front of the fire place but when out at a function it's the scotch I look for and Dewer's I prefer.

The price of Dewar's is just right for me and the Scots know how to blend a perfect drink that I have straight, on the rocks or with my favorite sweetener.
