I am a fan generally for slower paced games. I have tried Diablo 1 but it did not hook me and found myself not interested in it for long.
It's Pros
Diablo II is a great and fun game, I have been playing it for hours on end. It has added many more features from the first one. Including being able to hire mercenaries to help you, that fight by your side.
The game supports a huge amount of features, double button mouse, RAVE graphics or not (and the *not* is great for those who don't have a graphics card)
I found it worked well on my 333Mhz iMac without the RAVE installed, so it's a pretty quick game.
It's also a nicely slow paced game, it's great for those who like a little action but not too much, I'm disabled so I find reacting quickly and having to use many buttons can be very frustrating, this game works fine for me, one of the few that does.
This is definately a great step from Role Playing Games to action based games. It's not too hard to get into, movement is based on the mouse and just by clicking on a monster, it fires, so you can almost do everything without using the keyboard (and even more if you have a two button mouse)
I found the sound quality to be better then normal. All dialogues are read outloud with each person sounding different, I found it unusual to find a game that has this much detail in sound & language.
It's Cons
The single button mouse can be very frustrating, that's all I have so I can't use any other method (this game supports a bunch). But for a one button mouse, it means you have to hold command, shift, and control for various normal functions.
The mercenaries you hire are pretty dumb, and die very easily. I find myself using them for suicide missions where I need them to take the focus off myself when fighting, allowing me to kill off the enemies I want (try killing 50 skeletons that are raised over and over without killing the skeletal raise dead enemy). You can also only hire one mercenary at a time and do not gain experience from enemies killed by that mercenary (although you do get the items)
The game is a little dark, I tend to prefer cheery games that have an uplifting type of graphics. Hey I may be odd, but I thought I'd mention it anyways.
The graphics aren't the best, but they aren't bad either, just normal quality I found.
In Conclusion
This game is very entertaining! It supports a lot of hardware and does work without hardware upgraded graphics. Graphics are not the best, but the amusement factor definately compensated for that.
It's a great game for those who like a little bit of action but not too much, much like a role playing game but with slightly more action. For those who like lots of action, this game probably isn't best suited for you and for those who like the old role playing games where it pauses between screens, it won't be the game for you either.
