A very encouraging review... (Reply to this comment)
by ASourdough4
... especially after needing a replacement in a hurry... while on vacation down at Lone Pine, the portal for hiking up to Mt. Whitney, I let the aged HP 618 fall about 4" onto a wood deck seat - that killed it - everything worked OK until we needed to press that shutter button. Dead.
This accident came at a bad time, we were short on cash due to some capital expenditures on the house and I still use my own camera while appraising property over in Alpine County, CA So, my mission was to replace and make it cheap.
Office Depot has been good to me so I went there today and looked at the array of toys on display. One of them was priced at $99 (with $100 rebate) and I was impressed. There were two Nikons, one of them the disappointing CoolPix 3100 and there was a kit containing a CoolPix 2100 that came with case, cables, 64MB CompactFlash, etc for $250.
It came down to what I needed to replace - although the CF Memory Card is being phased out, I owned a 16MB and a 64MB, as well as a CF Card Reader and a TV CF Viewer. 2 Megapixels had been ample for my needs. I had been determined to buy a camera made by a CAMERA Manufacturer in hopes of improved quality images. I had used a Canonet 35MM camera for about 10 years with no problems except theft. Finally, I hated the AA Battery but had been mollified by the NiMH Rechargeable. The review on the A60/A70 was reassuring about battery life so I overcame that bias.
So, in a nutshell, the A60 met my needs and it is sitting here awaiting my further attention. Setup was very easy, Instructions written by a pro, It worked within minutes, It is an inch smaller than what I have been using and is much lighter.
So far, so good. Thanks Howard

Re: Nikon 2100? (Reply to this comment)

Hi,
I doubt I will have the opportunity to test the CP2100---however I did do a test of the CP3100 which is virtually identical except for the resolution (2mp vs 3 mp).
I hope that helps answer your questions

Nikon 2100? (Reply to this comment)
by amartin
Great Review!
But I have a doubt. Right now Iīm about to buy my first dig cam. Iīm between the Canon A60 and the Nikon 2100. But honestly I donīt know which one to choose. Whatīs more you didnīt review the nikon 2100 yet. :-)
The Nikon 2100 seems to have a better picture quality. On the other side you mentioned that the A60 is the best of its category.
Any recommendation?
Txs!

Re: a60, A70 or A80 arrrghhhhh..... (Reply to this comment)
by Howard_Creech, in Electronics
Hi avi550m,
It is almost impossible to predict which of 3 similar cameras would be best for you---however the A80 is not yet available---so let's concentrate on the A60 and the A70.
1. Your budget will "stretch" to cover the A70
2. You will likely want some enlargements form time to time (3 megapixel 8x10's look better than 2 megapixel 8x10's)
3. You have a limited time deal that will sweeten the pot with a free CF card and rechargeable batteries.
a free 256 MB CF & rechargeable batteries/charger will cover more than half of the price difference between the A60 and the A70---and you were going to have to buy the larger CF card and rechargeable batteries/charger anyway
I would say since you can swing the cost of the A70 and it will meet at least one of your requirements better than the A60---plus you can write off more than half the price difference between the two cameras---that should be enough to swing the deal toward the A70---it is always better to get a bit more capability than you think you will need.

a60, A70 or A80 arrrghhhhh..... (Reply to this comment)
by avi550m
I'm a first time digi cam buyer and i'm looking for a model with manual feratures, which the A- series provides at great prices. I will print some pictures , and maybe a few enlarged ones. I also want to edit the images on the computer. I initially thought of the Canon 2MP A60 ( being in my budget), but then the 3MP A70(budget got stretched). Now Canon is coming out with the 4MP A80, with the twist-n-go LCD screen. Which one is most suitable? I would love to have the A80, but i dunno if the extra resolution is worth the price, which is a bit too much for me, or will it be of much use over the A70?. Please answer soon as I have got a deal on the A60 & A70 for a free 256MB CompactFlash Card, and a set of 4 -2000 mAh batteries, which expires by 7th September........

Excellent Reviews.... (Reply to this comment)

I have read your A60/A70 reviews and I'm right on the verge of purchasing an A70, and lo and behold, Canon announces the 4 MP A80 with an improved control layout and a flipable, rotating LCD. If you can get your hands on one of those before the October release date and review it, that would be really great! Your reviews are concise and to the point, but they are full of 'meat', too. Thanks for all of your work

But will it Fry An Egg? (Reply to this comment)

Howard,
Another review that is gradually getting me to consider digital. I always said I'd go straight to a digital SLR, but who knows, maybe I'll just have to spring for a point and shoot in the mean time.
Your reviews of all of these little guys makes quite a few of them very enticing morsels.
Ahh, so many cameras, so little money (in my wallet, that is).
Thanks for all of these gems.
Cheers,

I Agree With Barb, Need My MH Button Here! (Reply to this comment)

Howard, although I am not sure what barrel distortion and pinhole are in terms of imaging, this is exactly the type of review I need, meaty yet concise, to help with the purchase of my 1st digicam.
Thanks so much for all you do, and I'll wait until November to watch for falling prices, then be on the lookout for either the A60 or A70. Kudos for providing a Most Helpful review!

Thanks again, Howard! As I mentioned, I ended up having to buy an A-60 before I had a chance to read your review, but I couldn't be happier with it. Your "In The Field" section is lovely as usual. Too bad I won't be passing through Kentucky on my way across the country this summer.

OK, How am I going to get one of those rolled oysters?
Another reason for me to come to Kentucky! Every time I read one of your reviews I want to eat and then take pictures of your home state..LOL
Thanks, Howard
Hope you are having a good holiday weekend

Another fine review!! I am in the market for a digital camera now. I happen to be one of those point and shoot folks, but, I think it's time I moved on up just a bit.
This camera sounds perfect.
