Oh I know, and trust me it hasn't bugged me but even things that are perfectly explained sometimes are things that are still not ideal, like this tripod mount. In a perfect world it would be mounted totally centered under the camera :)
But of course in a perfect world canon would be offering to upgrade my s230 to the s400 free of charge cuz it came out within six months of my purchase ROFLOL!!!

About the offset tripod mount. (Reply to this comment)

In the internal construction of a camera, a tripod mount has to installed in a place that has significant structural reinforcement. Considering the restricted size of this camera, the telescoping lens mechanism takes up most of the space near the bottom center, leaving no additional space for the tripod socket. Hence the offset position.
