S400 or S45? The S400 offers a smaller size, the same resolution, the same digital image processor chip, and the same autofocus system, but a slightly slower top shutter speed (1/2000 of a second v. 1/5000 of a second). The more important difference is probably in the flash -- you will get better flash shots from the S45.
Does this matter? If you're just a casual point and shoot user, go for the smaller S400 package. If you're a little more serious (but still not in the professional-grade market), then tote around the larger S45.
Can you go wrong either way? Not really -- these are great units.
