Pros: Automatic still shot mode and ergonomic design.
Cons: As any digital camera it eats batteries; buy AA rechargeables. And a 128mb Memory stick.
The Bottom Line: When you are faced with many digital cameras, this one stands out. It is big enough to fit in your hand and has all the features of its competitors.

| steampunk1881's Full Review: Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-P72 Digital Camera |
After 20 years of shooting 35mm film, mainly with point and shoot cameras and an old Canon F-1 (you know, the last one that did not require batteries and would work well after being buried in snow for a year), I finally took the plunge today and bought a digital camera, the Sony DSC-P72, at the local Circuit City. I have actually been shopping for a digital camera for about a year, after I found that most consumer film labs cannot handle anything these days more complex than Grandma's overexposed pets dressed in Christmas garb pictures. I also borrowed a Sony Mavica digital camera for an evening but its bulkyness and floppy drive storage did not work out.
I looked over the whole line of digital cameras (yes I did drool over the Sony F828, but I am not going to spend that much on any camera). I chose the DSC-P72 mainly because of the location of the controls and the ease of holding the camera. I have larger hands and could not really feel comfortable with the Kodak, Canon, and Fuji cameras. The Sony has a raised ridge on the front of the camera that allows a firm right hand grip on the camera, while allowing a steady index finger on the shutter.
The features of this model are described well in previous reviews and are comparable to other cameras in its class (3.2 megapixels). I will not really need the movie features as I already have a Sony digital camcorder (still love it!!).
I was impressed with the Automatic mode. Coming from a manual mode everything world (f stops, shutter speed, ISO, etc.) I was blown away with the quality of this camera's auto mode. Even in difficult lighting situations as in a mix of bright sunlight and shadows, the sharpness and color saturation blew away anything I had been getting back from the photo labs. Also, when I bought the camera, I did not realized that this model has a one touch macro mode for close up shots. The pink spring flower sample shot I took was as good as anything I had taken with the old F-1.
Indoor shots with flash were very good, and, of course, red eyes in people are gone with an easy setup option (a slight preflash that contracts the pupils before the shot is taken). Even a macro closeup of our black dog's face turned out well with a little touchup from Adobe Photoshop Album.
In summary, after looking and trying various digital camera for the last year, I feel good about this purchase. Other than the slight cons, I would strongly recommend you try this camera.
