| icieling's Full Review: Cool-Icam Dion DCP-400 Personal CD Player |
Whilst looking for an MP3 CD player, I stumbled across the DCP-400 on eBay. It has a very good balance between costs and features. In addition to that, it has a very sleek "iced-metal" look. The remote with the backlight was probably the clincher that made me buy it.
The player supports WMA and MP3, and also has SRS technology, which gives a "3D effect" to the music. With SRS turned on, it is very easy to get high volumes.
However, there were a few problems with the player. It has the ability to do a firmware upgrade (and hopefully it will support other formats like OGG soon), but there is a high probability of damaging your player by upgrading. It was only after a replacement that I got it to work. Also, under some outlying accidental circumstances (such as opening the cover whilst still playing or incorrect termination of the player's operation), the system can freeze and refuse to start up. At times, the remote will also suffer dysfunction, with the display either blanking itself or blinking random lines. This can usually be resolved by disconnecting the remote from the player then plugging it back in.
Another problem is the fragility of the player itself. It is made of metal, but this is thin metal, to keep it sleek. However, the only protection that comes with the player is a cloth bag. I recommend buying a hard-case protection for this player. I've got a minor dent on the face of my player from normal storage in a bag, but luckily it does not affect the CD spinning.
The player uses two rectangular flat type rechargeable batteries which last around 8 hours, depending on use of course. With the external battery pack, the activation time can probably double, although I have not tested the player to its max.
As with many mp3 CD players, CD-R will probably read much faster than CD-RW. Beware, however, of excessive shock. Place the player in a relatively cushioned part of your bag if you're walking. Jogging might be out of the question. Shock it too much and the OS can malfunction, which means you might have to reset it by taking out the batteries.
This player also has other features such as karaoke, multi-language support, ID3 tag, etc.
