bdizzlefizzle's Full Review: TiVo Series2â„¢ (80 Hours) (80 GB) 80-Hours Video ...
I know it sounds ridiculous that a little box could "change my life", but I really feel like it did. There's always something to watch now, which is great. I am the kind of guy who has a few favorite shows, and always remembers them after they're over. That's never going to be an issue again!
TiVo is easy to set up, and just plain awesome. My only concern is that I won't break out of my normal shows to watch other stuff because of the TiVo back log I've been building up. I think I'll be ok, though ;-)
If you travel a lot, then also pick up the Home Media option. If you leave home, but forget to set your TiVo to record something, you can do it over the Internet, which is really slick. There are other cool enhancements from this feature, but remote scheduling is the coolest in my mind.
As a tip on buying TiVo, I wish I had thought about this. You can get a refurbished TiVo for about $50 off from TiVo on their website. Right now, there's another $50 off rebate from TiVo, even on refurbished units, so you get TiVo for $100 off. I bought a used one on eBay, and, after shipping, barely got a discount off a brand new unit price. Plus, it stinks of cigarettes...I mean REALLY stinks. Like, even the cables smell horrible.
Also, the "Lifetime" subscription follows the unit. So, if you like to upgrade your technology frequently, then this is a bad idea, except that it will increase the resale value of your unit on eBay. Break-even for lifetime subscriptions is about 23 months vs the monthly 12.95 subscription fee.
UPDATED INFO:
I got the 80 hour unit...I don't know how big that drive is, though. Now, this is a big misleading since it's only around 80 hours in the lowest quality setting. I am using medium, which I think yields about 60 hours total.
They make a 40 and 80 hour right now (maybe even a 20 hour, which is worthless). I strongly suggest you get the 80 hour.
The additional Home Media Option functionalities are the ability to wireless stream photos and music to your TiVo from your desktop if you have a wireless network (with you TiVo connected to it via its USB ports). You can also wireless stream things recorded on one TiVo to another TiVo in your home. I really only forsee myself using the remote, Internet-based scheduling for when I'm at work and hear about a show I should watch (before I forget it's name), and when I'm on the road and forget to set something to record.
Anyway, I'd recommend TiVo to anyone and everyone. It's well worth it.
