I was introduced to Tivo by a friend and bought an 80-hour version recently during their price drop. I wish I had acted sooner and at full price -- Tivo completely eliminates the "there's nothing on TV" problem, and almost eliminates my resentment at paying inflated monthly cable monopoly charges, because now I'm actually using the cable service to watch the TV I want to watch, instead of whatever happens to be on at the time.
It's a truly revolutionary product -- for example, it keeps a 30-minute history of live TV, so you can hit pause and start up again to answer the phone, etc.
Also, my cable company's box does not have high quality S-Video connectors, but the Tivo does, so my television picture looks superb -- much better than using the cable box without Tivo [use the connection RF from cable box to TV, then S-Video to TV, *not* component video from cable box to Tivo].
Furthermore, being simply a Linux computer, there's a great deal of functionality and flexibility under the hood -- if you care to spend the time, there are entire books written about Tivo hacks [see http://hacks.oreilly.com/pub/ht/36], converting TV shows to video CDs, etc.
For example, Tivo has a 30-second commercial skip [after the Select-Play-Select-3-0-Select remote hack -- refer to "Tivo commercial skip" on Google]. This functionality should be standard, but perhaps Tivo does not wish to alienate cable partners by explicitly providing the means for their customers to ignore a principal revenue stream. However, because Tivo uses open source Linux, Tivo customers have all the control for themselves, and can easily bypass any such restrictions.
